Not sure I'm in the right forum, but here goes.

I had a couple of friends staying over in my gaff last weekend, and one went to check her work email on my broadband, but got "Connection refused". I just assumed her work server was down or something, but then last night, I started getting the error regularly.

After some investigation, I found that I couldn't connect to ANY https domains with Firefox. http is fine, as is IE (although that's on a different machine). The fact that the other machine works ok implies (to me anyway) that the router is fine, so could it be the firewall of the Firefox machine? Or is there a setting in FF that would be stopping it?

I honestly don't know when https last worked for me, or what I've done since then, but I would assume I've done something dumb.

    Any help would be appreciated.

your not using a proxy by any chance are you?
If so, try it without the proxy.

I don't know, misterq. How would I determine if I'm using a proxy? I've certainly never set one up specifically, and I'm the only one who uses the machine.

    In Firefox:
Tools -> Options -> General -> Connection -> Connection Settings

Nope, "direct connection" is the only option selected in that dialog.

Ah, cr*p. After yet more searching, I finally hit upon a site that mentioned NIS. I decided to look into my copy of NIS to see if there was anything in there. Guess what? NIS is not running. I had disabled ccApp in my msconfig which stops NIS from running altogether.

I'm going to get me some proper firewall and virus protection s/w and uninstall this piece of crap. Makes me a little concerned that I went at least a week without firewall protection, though
