IolBB Caps Increased!

Mine says I've exceeded mine by 2 gb already. Am I supposed to stay offline now for the rest of the month? A 16 gb cap with a 2 bit line is foolish and should be exceeded by everyone as soon as possible. If people don't exceed their caps the service providers are going to think that their service is adaquate.

I bought it when it wasnt cheap.

    Now im on cable.. :O

And another thing... You complaining about caps will not make a major corporation change their policies... and Comreg definitely will not fight the corner of a bigger cap.
They want affordable fast BB for the average home user.

    What...........?

Your on cable.....why are you even posting on this thread......did you even read the header..."Will iolBB/EsatBT increase Caps???"....???
You have effectively a 30GB as is.....would you like me to ring up NTL and ask them to downgrade your CAP to 16GB a month..as you feel perfectly happy with such for all us iolBB/EsatBT users????

Please stop posting on this thread as it has ZERO effect on you.

Yeah i agree with julius and also, 8 gigs and even 16 gigs, **** it even 32 gigs and 64 gigs is not right. We need to be given value for our money, 40 ****ing euro, i repeat 40 euro is the price of an 8gig cap broadband. I want at least 100gigs, which is the equivalent of 5euros worth of broadband. So guys i reckon we should like pester costumer service on there live help at least 4 times each of us a day.

has anyone ever been charged for going over cap

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 240 ✭✭julius

Would someone speak up if they have been charged as I'll probable hit 20GB this month myself!!!

    Safety in numbers and such...;-)

I was onto IOL yesterday confirming which package I've signed up for, and was quite surprised to hear that they've increased their cap by 50%!
That makes IOL Broadband 1Mb 8Gb cap -> 12Gb cap and the Plus package (2Mb) 16Gb cap -> 24Gb cap!
Still haven't found this information on their site though...!
    Can anyone else confirm this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,017 ✭✭✭lomb

yeah its official on their website 24 GB for the plus, also if u combine line rental and broadband its 49 or 57 euro for basic/ plus respectively.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,187 ✭✭✭ondafly

anyone know when the new cap is up and running ? I'm at 10 gig of 16 gig, and I have a warning on the usage calc telling me 5 days left blah blah

phoned them this morning to make sure it was for existing customers, it is, its for everyone.

effective this morning its 12/24 gb depending on your package.

have fun lads, although this looks like more ****e pings, as everyone uses the bandwidth even more :D

Okay i still tink 12 gigs is terrible, we should keep pushing for more, i reckon everyone should go to there live help and ask for the increase to be 16/32 at least!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 450 ✭✭Willymuncher

Ah thank god, a nice big download tempted me this morning and i was thinking what the hell, i'd go for it...even though i was over my cap, nice to see this confirmed, least now i can download without any worry of being charged :)

24gig is alright, that'll pretty much cover everything i need to download in a month, i'm happy....30 gig would have been great, but this'll do for now i guess

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 705 ✭✭✭-Al-

was thinkin that this morning too, where never happy are we :D

really though, now we have a little extra cap, id rather push for atleast a 256 up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 240 ✭✭julius

Well if we stop protesting for more then they'll get lazy and wont offer us better offers?!?!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 529 ✭✭✭Ebonyks

24gigs...think i saw that figure fly by sometime last week already. How can they justify a 50% increase in cap when given 4 X the speed. I suppose its a start in the right direction..but nowhere near the 50gigs (minimum) I was hoping for.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 448 ✭✭Agent Orange

I would be very careful about going above 16gigs this month. They have not updated their official BB website:

    http://www.iol.ie/broadbandplus/bbp_faq.htm

My online download calculator says that I will go over my cap in 11 days despite having downloaded 8 gigs so far this month.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 240 ✭✭julius

Even with the increase to a 12/24GB CAP...I have no doubt that there will be a huge amount of users going beyond that CAP this month.

It may stabilise next month....but people were always going to get excited using a new Faster connection.

Does anyone REALLY need a 50GB cap? What would you do with it? You would have to be buying new hard drives every couple of months! :)

hehe i could use 50gb up in a month no problem. Nice to see a semi reasonable download limit at last i was starting to think it would never happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Eye

ok so is this 24Gb limit taking effect immediatly or is it from next month on or what?

i've got 7Gbs of my 16 used up and getting the warning saying i'll go over the limit in 17 days :(

if it was on 24gb i should be able to have 9.4gb's downloaded today before getting the warning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 705 ✭✭✭-Al-

quoting the guy on the phone this morning "effective as of this morning"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Eye

fair enough i'll take your word for it and start downloading again :D
will probably just take a little time for the stats counter to be updated

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 705 ✭✭✭-Al-

ya was checkin mine aswell, i have 9 gigs downloaded, says ill go over in 9 days, but im sure it will update itself. Im not to worried anyway, if I get billed ill give em hell for lieing :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,334 ✭✭✭OfflerCrocGod

Blah 24Gb is nothing :( I was hoping for 30 something - oh well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 450 ✭✭Willymuncher

Well the meter thing calculates usage at around 6 am every morning, noticed that since i am usually up at that time....so we shall see tomorrow if it shows new stats

can i just ask what the hell are you guys downloading that you would need 50 gigs

    is it bittorrent

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

    Threads Merged.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 705 ✭✭✭-Al-

it doesnt have to be illegal stuff, I downloaded a mod for battlefield vietnam, was about 1 gig, game demos, everything adds up, but you dont usually see 50 gig caps, you just see unlimited thats why it looks very big.

But ofcourse theres always going to be other uses too.

when did the move to BTIRELAND.IE happen?
Won't improve there customer service anyway!

It's the EsatBT page that officially says that the cap for BB Plus is now 24GB.

My post was merged from another thread where I brought up the new caps last week and was met with some understandable skepticism.

The cap is now combined. Yes. Thats right. Combined. So 16GB down and 8GB up is fine. 20GB down and 6GB up is not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 488 ✭✭lad12

I used their live help to get some more info and seemingly the caps where always combined...i thought it was 16 up and 16 down on the iol plus package?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 145 ✭✭jayneemac

has anyone ever been charged for going over cap

yep. not sure exactly how much coz it was after my 4month free period?
if they charged me 90Euro for the modem then it was prob only somethin like 6Euro...
i was very pissed at the time coz i didn't realise i had to pay to install the modem myself (which makes no bloody sense!)

i know it's in the T&C, but i didn't cop it at the time.

is it possible to upgrade to Plus after six months of use? i'd like to be able to keep the crappy modem at the very least...

I rang EsatBT's customer care line to get clarification. At first the guy said it was 24 up and 24 down - he was "pretty sure". I said "pretty sure" wasn't really good enough given the financial penalties at stake so he went off to confirm. When he returned he said it was actually 24 combined up and down.

"Has anyone thought of telling thecustomer about this?"
"Yes, letters have been printed off and are going out in the post today"

I wait with bemused expression to see if this letter ever arrives.

where are you getting your info from???

a number of posters were speaking to esatbt help monkeys & we were all told that it was 16up & 16down = NOT combined!

No it wasn't. From the old IOL FAQ:
The 16GB limit refers to both upload and download. You will be entitled to use 16GB in either direction without penalty. i.e. you can upload 15GB and download 15GB in the same month without penalty. However if you upload 4GB and download 17GB then your account will be suspended

The new FAQ on btireland.ie states:
You are entitled to free transfer of up to 12GB (24GB for Broadband Plus) of data in any given month .
If you go over this generous limit then we reserve the right to charge you for any additional data (at 3 cents including VAT per MB).

But fails to explicitly state if that is actually combined, though it seems to be, or if it's an either direction limit, i.e. 24G up and 24G down.
i thought it was 16 up and 16 down on the iol plus package?
It was, and if it's now 24G combined that's actually a reduction and I for one will be cancelling at the end of my trial. I'll wait till these letters they're talking about appear and see what the actual limit will be first though.

Just been looking at the support pages from help.iol.ie and this is what it says when I searched the broadband section for "transfer limit"
You are entitled to a free transfer limit of up to 12 Gigabytes

of data in any given month.

If you go over this generous limit then we reserve the right to charge you for any additional data (at 3cent inc VAT per MB).

You will be entitled to use 12GB in either direction without penalty. i.e. you can upload 12GB and download 12GB in the same month without penalty. However if you upload 4GB and download 13GB then your account will be suspended.

This data allowance is calculated at the end of every 24 hrs and if you are consistently above this amount we reserve the right to suspend or permanently disconnect your account during the first month you go over it.

So there's an explicit declaration that it is not a combined 12G limit on normal broadband anyway, it's 12G in each direction. It doesn't have a similar statement for the BB plus package but I would imagine that it is 24G in each direction for that too.

This is the link, if it works for others, not sure it will.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 240 ✭✭julius

Well I take that this discussion is over now!!!

The CAP is not combined but is the amount of data which can be uploaded or downloaded in either direction.

    END OF STORY!!!!!

For BB+ it is 24G each way, the link is on the bottom of that last page I linked.
You are entitled to a free transfer limit of up to 24 Gigabytes of data in any given month.
If you go over this generous limit then we reserve the right to charge you for any additional data (at 3cent inc VAT per MB).
You will be entitled to use 24GB in either direction without penalty. i.e. you can upload 24 GB and download 24GB in the same month without penalty. However if you upload 4GB and download 25GB then your account will be suspended.

It would just seem that nobody in Esat or BT Ireland has a clue where to find this answer, or is aware of it's existance. No surprises there then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,225 ✭✭✭Scruff

if thats the case can someone explain why if you dont get charged for downloading 24gb and uploading 24gb (total of 48gb traffic on the backhaul) for 1 month but if you do if you downloand 25gb and upload 1gb (total traffic over backhaul 26gb) you get billed\cut off????

dowload congesting the network? money grabbing?
