Free wi-fi from Eircom

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, maybe its old news but decided to post it just in case.

Eircom are providing free wifi access from 50 m from some phone boxes.

Is there any or much diffrence with wi-fi then say the modem i got from the start.Im asking because i got a wi-fi card with my motherboard.

Wi Fi as I understand it is short range. ie you would need to be very close to the source. I use Wi Fi around my house for my laptop and it works quiet well. Speeds are very much the same as with the modem. The Wi Fi router is a Belkin and it has the added security of having a firewall installed in it. Dont know how handy it would be on a desktop but it rocks on my laptop.

You only need the one system to connect, same as running on a wired network.

Riiight, i was looking to see what the model was from the eircom offer. Think ill just have to end the conversation here, before you start linking me to IEEE specifications or Wireless for Dummies or something
