When I was with Esat Business 512/256 I got 64kb/s dl and with Eircoms plus I only got 53.5kb/s and my gaming ping was 20 lower with Esat so was that to do with diff interleaving settings or the better upload or a bit of both? ;)

that does not explain the drop in ping for everyone who has tried it so far
Nope it got worst for me, my download speeds also went down.

I think the Engineers in Eircom would know what they support.

Nope it got worst for me, my download speeds also went down.

perhaps it only works for people on eircom

for anyone who wants to try it using the routher that comes with eircom dsl

    go to http://192.168.1.254/

    got to expert mode
then Home > Configure > WAN > ATM
change from ppp iver ethernet to ppp over atm
clock submit and restart the routher

Baldy if you are with eircom try pining boards.ie and see what you get
change to PPPoA and try again and let us know how you get on

Nope not anymore I'm getting the same pings on both now (my pings are now back to normal). Hopefully tommorow I'll be getting my full 2Mb, it does seem as if the problems are clearing up now.

Step by step setup of PPPoA with VC Mux and now I'm online with PPPoE and LLC encapsulation, receiving DNS etc. Ping I could not even connect with PPPoA and VC Mux. While I am on IOL PLUS it is still an eircom network therefore it will have the same settings. IE VPI = 8, VCI = 35, PPPoE and LLC. There is no point in implementing two version of ADSL on one network. It would be cost prohibitive.

As long as my ping stays at 10 on the Irish BFV servers, I'll be happy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 994 ✭✭✭JNive

But what you are suggesting is that some modems attempt PPPoA and fallback to PPPoE cause PPPoA isnt implemented. Yet if thats the case, why the difference in performance, it is quite obviously dependent on either modems, lines or even exchanges.

And frankly i dont care, PPPoA setting gives me better ping and bandwidth and slightly less overhead.

I've just tried changing over to ppoa and it doesnt work. So either its just me or Iol dont support it :S... back to ppoe and steady 30ping to jolts

    Here's some indisputable PPPoA stuff.

    PPPoA pings

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
        Minimum = 29ms, Maximum = 30ms, Average = 30ms

    PPPoE pings
Pinging clarity.jolt.co.uk [195.149.21.11] with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 195.149.21.11: bytes=32 time=38ms TTL=59

Attached are my DSL modem settings and login.

Download speeds seem higher with lower overhead on the upload. Though that's just opinion.

I changed to PPPoA settings and found that altho my pings went lower for dos pings, my actual ingame ping was generally higher and went quite unstable from time to time and also my internet would lag out for maybe 15 seconds here and there. so ive changed them back to the original settings PPPoE

When you use JPEG for screen captures you make baby jesus cry.

    Cheers for the info thou.

EDIT: How does a measley 10ms make a difference anyhows?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,563 ✭✭✭Tazzle

In gaming it really does :P Oh and yeh, it looks bleurgh, but i had to use like a compression ratio of 50% so it'd be under the 100K attachment limit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,981 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

PNG is your friend for normal windows screencaps (if you can save as that)

I'm gonna try it later, but just to note, my pings which were nearly 40 in game to games5.iol.ie have dropped to below 30, just by resetting the router. Hopefully PPPOA does some crazy crap :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,788 ✭✭✭Vikings

Ping to jolt.co.uk down to ~30ms, ping to games5.iol.ie down to ~20ms. Great improvement since last night. Downloads are still a bit off. Was getting ~210 from heanet earlier yet only getting ~13.5 (yes 13.5!) from micro$oft.

the upgrade went extremely well for me up untill this afternoon, now boards takes forever to load/change pages and pings are gone mental...when i do a speed test i still get about 215k/sec which is great but my pings are now slightly higher than before and spiking at times which aint good.

I just confirm what I was saying with an Eircom representative! They say it's impossible. They do use PPPoA but not for consumer applications I've been told by 3 different representatives what I have stated above

i tried PPPoA a few times on eircom broadband using the netopia 4 port modem and the performance wasnt stable at all, often my connection just went dead while on PPPoA and another time it wouldnt connect at all so Ive gone back to PPPoE for good and things are alot more stable but my pings are still a bit spikey from time to time, a problem that never happened before the upgrade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,132 ✭✭✭Dinner

I'm still on PPOA with UTV and its a hell of a lot better than PPOE, pings are in double figures as opposed to triple.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,806 ✭✭✭Xcellor

    My connection is weird.

    Minimum = 24ms, Maximum = 73ms, Average = 37ms

    Then five minutes later.

    Minimum = 173ms, Maximum = 254ms, Average = 214ms

    Pinging boards.ie

    On IOL BB+

    :(

Haha, Eircom representatives. Did they ask you if you wanted ISDN when you were finished?

    Mine are fine
I'm on UTV but no idea if the problem is with them or Eircom. Pings settled about midnight last night but are back ~150 this evening. Just have to wait and see if it improves I guess.

Just to add, I changed to PPPoA after pings had settled last night and got about a 5-6 ms decrease in pings. I didn't get a chance to try it out in a game yet though so dunno about stability.

On 512/128k got 45 ping to UK servers at best times, now on 2mb i'm getting mid 30's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 925 ✭✭✭wideangle

I was looking forward to a few online games of o.p.k. lastnight but me ping was at 250 so every server I joined I got kicked!!!The regular server I join my ping is usually between 50 and 60 its to germany..by the way but that was over 200 ping lastnight too. When I reset my modem the download speed actually slowed down.
Whats the point being able to download mods and patches for online games at superfast speed when your ping is so high no server will let you join?
