1Gb a day is grand, For god sake how much illegal music/videos can you listen to/watch?
    p.s. don't answer its Rhetorical!

I think it's still just as clear as it was before. If you're consistently/regularly exceeding 1GB a day, then they'll contact you. Once or twice a month is fine.

    Got the letter.

    D12.

    No contention issues.

Guess I'll just have to throttle my downloads with netlimiter.

A program that would switch your pc off when you've downloaded a certain amount would be so cool.

Ran a few ping tests on a couple of site here and in the US and Europe. Average 45 on all of them. Also NTL phoned me today. I told them that I was aiming more towards the monthly cap rather than the daily one. Also asked about possible speed upgrades however he said he didn't know anything about it and it was to do with the marketing department. The seem to be gathering feedback from some of the high users. Also it seems they sent out the letters to try and keep the network optimised. Sounds like its coming under heavy pressure these days.

Hrm the only ever slowdown I've noticed on the NTL network was about four weeks ago when I couldn't get a proper connection to the NTL network anyway (was connecting to the local node but not getting past the gateway onto the net).

Enforcing a cap on any service tbh annoys me, I mean you're paying them enough for the server in the first place and you should be able to do whatever the hell you frigging want with it (as long as it's not something highly illegal like messing with kiddie porn or whatever).

Anyways couldn't you come up with the kind of excuse like 'ohh sorry well the website or whatever doesn't really give me an indication of the bandwidth I'm using, so I have no idea when I'm going over the cap if I'm downloading... ehhhh... 'Linux ISOs' ;-)

Just use an excuse like that. Now, this may prompt them to just put a monitor for it on the site but then where's the harm in that? I don't usually download alot but lately I've been downloading songs, albums and various epsides of the simpsons and enterprise so I might have gone over the 1 gig limit once or twice.

Caps annoy me so much tbh, and there's always a backup like someone noticed in Smart's, that says they can enforce a cap any time they want. Once upon a time NTL didn't even have a guideline, let alone a cap.

Caps are for wearing tbh, not for imposing on innocent (yeh right) broadband users.

I was one of the first to get NTL broadband when it first came out and at that stage there were no caps whatsoever. The contract i signed was for no caps so i'm wondering now if they can enforce this on me. I do download a good bit and would easily exceed the 30GB per month usage thingy. I havent received any letter yet but i'm guessing one is on the way. Have i a leg to stand on if i complain about the situation?

they would have had it in the T&C's that they were subject to change without notice..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,232 ✭✭✭MrVestek

I remember when I first got NTL and I read through the contract seeing as I'd be the one paying for it and I remember it saying something along the lines of 'NTL reserves the right to change it's contract with you including it's terms and conditions without notifying you of such changes'.

That's obviously what they did tbh.

It seems it would boil down to a point of law. i.e. is a contract valid which states that one party may change the contract without prior notification or even agreement from the other party to the contract.

I don't know the answer to that. Anyone want to be a test case :D

Hopefully it's not, so I can demand 10Mbps of bandwidth in compensation... synchronus ;)

Yeah I have heard they are doing this lately. There service is overpriced compared to the latest offerings. What are they going to do if you continue to break the cap? Cancel your subscription? Grand, we'll just go to smart... faster, and cheaper.

Well since my land line doesn't pass the test, I don't have that choice.

I don't get how you can go past that on a daily basis for the entire month. Theres no way you could watch, listen to that much material even if you did download it. Even if it was distros, you hardly need to download those every day.

I haven't got the letter, and have been having problems with connecting and erratic pings for ages. D.15.

Well if things keep up like this then I'l just move to IBB. I don't have time for a 1GB a day cap. A 40GB a month cap I can handle but at 1GB a day, christ it'll just become a major inconvenience and then an annoyance.

Seriously, how can you use 1GB a day?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,573 ✭✭✭Infini

Old TV shows, Linux ISO's, Free games, OST's,etc. take your pick.

    www.thetradersden.org

(as soon as it comes online you'll see what i mean). One single torrent can easily be over 1 gig. And no, it isn't a warez site. A gig a day is easy when a video encoded in DVD format is a mere 4 gigs...

EDIT: Streaming full quality MP3's also takes a fair whack of bandwidth. Average mp3 bitrate is 200... Its for when i'm in college and want to listen to my collection. Dead handy. Admittedly, thats upload not download though...

Interestingly IBB is now looking at potentially implementing a cap of about 30GB, they are talking about it over on another thread.

In fairness almost every company has a cap and NTL's is one of the biggest and they seem to be quiet fair about it. UTV start charging you (1 cent odd per mb) the second you go over the 8/16GB cap or cut you off for the rest of the month, similiarly with Digiweb.

Actually these letters are the best evidence yet that NTL are about to increase the speeds to 1/2/3mb. With everyone on NTL's network likely to get much higher speeds, they understandably want to put some constrant on what poeple download so the network doesn't ground to a halt and their expenses explode.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,573 ✭✭✭Infini

True but I'd prefer the monthly 40GB cap rather than a 1GB a day cap simply because the former would be easier to manage and would be tolerable rather than an inconvenient 1 size doesn't fit all daily cap.

Where can you get a product with a 40G cap? ONly IBB doesn't have caps I thought. So unless your in their catchment...

I understand how you can download more than 1G a day/30GB a month. I just don't know how you have time to play the games, install the ISO's, watch all the MP3's and Video that you download.

Seen a 2meg line in action the other night and it was frightening at how fast it was.I havent been contacted by NTL about anything, but looking back over my Dumeter they have no cause to really, well there was last months but i wont go there :D .Hitting there cap at 1gig a day on a 2meg line wont take long if big files are being downloaded.

Mate of mine said he downloaded a 500meg file in 40minutes(imagine  ).God help us. :D

I've downloaded files that fast on my 1.5Mbps on bit torrent... tbh the speeds i usually get are about 190kbps. Once ya find the right torrents or a nice T1 user on DC++...

hmm Those who have got the letters, what area are you in?

and how long have you had cable with ntl for?

I only ask because I am suprised I haven't got a letter, I go very much over the 1gb a day limit, and the 30gb a month limit..... I am guessing this is either because my area isn't having any problems/slowdowns, or because I was one of the first cable users here, have had it many years now, and when I signed up the contract said unlimited downloads

Maybe they aren't sending letters to old users who signed the old contract? (probably not but just curious if all these ppl getting letters are new users)

One other thing. Why is everyone here assuming the new owners of ntl:ireland will make the service better or remove the caps? .... Seriously, get real... why would they? out of the goodness of their heart? They only do this to make money, as long as they can get away with ripping us off, they will. Plus unlimited bandwidth would cost them alot, which is why nobody is really doing it here... which I am guessing boils down to international bandwidth costing them alot

in fact... ntl owned their own pipe to the UK, to their network there.... so i'd imagine ntl could do it all cheaper than whatever new crowd buys them.

If i am missing something someone please fill me in on why everyone thinks it'll be better when ntl are sold :\ could be worse.

These 2 items are the cause of our expectations; not the sale of ntl:
    1) Currently the ntl base offering is 300/64kbps, eircom and their resellers now have 1024/128kbps.
    2) Have a peek at this thread

I don't think there's a mass assumption that 'nova-ntl' will be better, people have argued for and against whether the new owners, most likely UGC (owners of chorus) as the preferred bidder, will be a good or a bad thing. There's the possibility of a competition authority investigation, people say Chorus sucks, others that UGC are good, others etc. etc.
Only time will tell, one thing is for sure, we'll be watching with big eyes

well, ntl are supposed to be changing their service to 1/2/3mbit soon.

But the way people have been acting on these forums is, that they're expecting the buyers to roll out 8mbit, and uncapped service ... I don't really see this happening... speedwise they may roll out faster eventually, but I doubt the cap would be removed. especially with all the issues people are having, especially in D15

Thing is tho, ntl is primarily a cable tv provider, so that will get higher priority than broadband i'd assume... doubt the broadband package would change much any time soon at least (if the buyers will be even interested in internet at all )

Strange thing. Dublin 15 seems to be the only part of the NTL network that seems to have chronic problems. Haven't heard of anyone in other areas having problems like this. As for cyruss's comment NTL was initially aiming for triple play (TV, BB and phone) and I think the new owners will be aiming for this too.

This is the linky to upgrade in the UK but it wont work again till tomorrow. Might try giving it a go and see if it works.http://www.ntlworld.com/data-feeds/editorial/microsites/tierMigration/cablemodem.php

Yeh I tried using that url a cpl of weeks ago.... for me it said that I was a "ntl dialup customer"... dunno where it got that from, never used ntl dialup in my life. Was gonna re-register on that site as cable, but i'd be afraid i'd get double billed or i mess something up with my account, so i didnt bother.
