Brainwashed how? Please don't tell me we've all been brainwashed by Pepsi ads. If this thread proves anything its that skaters (among others) are very aware of how marketing campaigns work and don't fall for them.

Sorry for sort of digging this argument back up but I've read the whole thread and there are too many retarded posts for me to say nothing.

The thing that really needs to be established is what do we mean when we describe a sport as "extreme".

    Is it that
    (a) It requires extremely high levels of physical fitness
    (b) It requires extremely high levels of specialised skill/natural talent
    (c) Only an extremely small proportion of the population have the natural ability / talent to even take part in the sport
    (d) There is an extremely high risk of getting injured
    (e) There is an extremely high risk of getting seriously injured
    (f) There is an extremely high risk of death

As compared to other sports, skateboarding only compares well in (b) and (d), and even then, not outstandingly so.

To my mind an exteme sport is something that rank highly in some combination of (a) (b) (c) (e) and especially (f).

Alright, I think everyone seems to be missing the point here. Extreme sports are any sport where IV bagloads of Adrenaline are being shot into your bloodstream. Skateboarding is like the daddy of extreme board sports. If you've never set foot on a skate board (or if you "used to do it a bit when I Was a kid") then I'm sorry but your opinion doesnt count. You dont know what you're talking about.

I never did it as a kid and took it up there about a year ago (aged 24) and I can assure you, its not something thats easy and natural to take up, like say for example football.

In terms of that list above
    (a) Physical fitness has nothing to do with the definition of what makes an extreme sport extreme. It only has to do with what makes an Extreme sport a sport.
    (b) It requires extremely high levels of specialised skill/natural talent - Nobody has high levels of specialised skill when they start something, and everything has to be learned by people when they take it up. Natural talent is an advantage to you in the persuit of your sport not a neccessity.
    (c) The very nature of extreme sports sort of makes this point moot because most people dont want to hurt themselves.
    (d) There is an extremely high risk of getting injured - This point would be infinitely more valid if it was reworded to: "There is an extremely high risk of getting injured as a beginner". I got hurt almost everytime I skated when I took it up at first.
    (e) There is an extremely high risk of getting seriously injured - This is sort of a moot point really, except that by increasing the danger the adrenaline is also increased.
    (f) There is an extremely high risk of death - as with (e)

Theres plenty adrenaline in skateboarding and as a beginner there's also considerable risk of injury, so its an extreme sport imo but anyway this entire debate is a farce really because it doesnt matter a w4nk in a windstorm what anyone here thinks; the rest of the world is quite sure its an extreme sport.

Does this mean you leaving? yay!

Anyway, I think another element of *Extreme Sports* is the non-competitive element. At least in the sense that you're only competing with yourself to improve and not with others, at least not in a point scoring way ;)

Eh....Xgames? WinterX games? To mention just a tiny fraction of the competitive Extreme sports competitions. Thats like saying: In ice skating you only compete with yourself to improve.

I dont agree with that at all. I dont think it has anything to do with 'iv bags' of adrenaline. To me extreme sports are about doing things that most people wouldnt do for any other reason other than lack of interest. I've heard people who dont skate say 'oh id love to be able to do this/that, but id be to scared'. Thats what makes it 'extreme'. I hate to say that word infact, because the medium which we all persue isnt about being 'extreme', its about the social life(for me anyway). I dont see skateboarding as 'the daddy' of extreme board sports. I would say snowboarding is, even surfing over skateboarding. And its simply because imo some snowboarders are absolutly nuts. I've honestly only seen 4/5 clips in my life of someone on a skateboard impressing me. To me, skateboarding is like watching bill cosby tap dance when i could be watching caveman break dance. I do understand skateboarding is super technical, but thats about all there is to it imo. The sport honestly bores me, its too slow and i dont get style in it like i do other sports, most tricks look horrid but thats just me, whatever you're into! I dont mean to offend skateboarders with that comment.

It is most definitely an extreme sport and it is obviously one of the most, if not the most popular one out there. What gets me irritated is how such activities as MMA and motocross are considered extreme sports. MMA imo is 2 fools in a ring hitting each other with litterally NO class. Motocross... how the hell did that get the coverage it gets? If you rely on an engine, its a motorsport. I dunno. All these sports are now regarded as 'extreme', bullshit.

Jump out of a plane - loads of skill involved there in a: Falling and B: landing.... but you can die doing it, well then its extreme!! BMXing, Rollerblading, Skateboarding, surfing, ski/snowboarding. Theres your extreme sports summed up.
