    Thanks

Can't give you much help yet I'm afraid, but I am interested in this, as is Weston (Phobos) who should be replying on here with some helpful info soon smile.gif

Can you give us some more info - what OS are you running there? Do Ipaqs normally "run"[1] WinCE? (forgive my ignorance wink.gif)

I know there's a version of Linux available off the Compaq site that some J2ME developers are using to develop on...

    1. In as much as a M$ OS can run wink.gif

    At last something interesting wink.gif

Right I have been looking in to this extensively over the past few weeks. The most popular and easy to get JVM for the Ipaq is Insignia's Jeode VM. It is Sun approved and all. But that will cost ya about £20 - 30 (which I'm not going to pay, so I'm on the lookout for another).

Here is the link to Insignia's VM for the Ipaq

Here is a link to Compaq's developer info

Here is a link to a site with PDA everything

Linux on the Ipaq [very interesting stuff]

If you get any more info yourself, will ya post some links (or whatever) back to us. Because interest seems to be spreading all over the place.

Also I picked up TY J2ME in 21 Days in WaterStones on Dawson St., and it's very good. I recommend that for anyone developing Javaware for embedded devices.

Al. the Ipaq comes with Pocket PC (WinCE 3.0) installed. It's actually the most solid version of CE on the market. But the Linux stuff has me all interested. It won't be long until we can get free apps all over the place for Ipaq. But twould be nice all the same to get a free VM for CE 3.0.

    [edit]
I was just having a look back for some J2ME threads, and found this one. At this stage I should point out that if you are doing any Java development on the Ipaq I recommend you get your hands on PersonalJava from wireless.java.sun.com. There is an early access release available for the StrongARM CPU, which the Ipaq is using ATM.

    Cheers,

What exactly are your plans with the Ipaq and Java? (if you don't mind me asking). wink.gif

TBH I think the whole area of wireless clients is fantastic, and I intend to include it in my final year project. But it would be interesting to know what other people are doing with it.

Thanks for the info. Currently considering Jeode as we will have some web browser stuff going on.

Another solution is Personal Java and the JVM from Sun

Any opinions about Oracle 8i Lite ?

In regards to your ideas for using a serial port interface between your client application and the DB (or server app) on the computer, is that possible?. I don't have an Ipaq, or any other kind of PDA for that matter (Yet, still thinking about it). When you say serial interface do you mean using the PDA while it is sitting in it's supplied cradle?. I would have thought that you could only use the serial cradle for synchronising and transferring files, but not as an medium for distributed applications. I would like to hear that it works, but I thought you would need to go out and purchase networking equipment for the unit (through it's expansion jacket).

    Lettuce know, anyway!

You might want to also take a look at the Wabba and SuperWabba VMs. The former has been around for quite a while and both will run on both PalmOS and CE platforms.

SuperWaba is currently avaliable as a Beta (v.3) release.

WabaJump is a further API that will allow porting to native binary for PalmOS.

It's not bad, but a little limited with regard to UI classes (a very cut down version of AWT), at least with the original Waba.

Thanx m8, I really appreciate those links. Should come in useful. I am always open to Java development freebies.
