Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Help me buy/setup/configure wireless home network

    Hi all,

I've little or no experience with wireless, the setup and the configuration. I am a competent PC user and know my way around.

Ok, I've got the breeze package from IBB at home. I want to setup a wireless network to use the net anywhere around my home, without the need for lenghty ethernet cable runs here there and everywhere.

I have a desktop PC upstairs, I've got a laptop that travels everywhere with me and I've got a IBB Breeze modem which is wired to my computer room downstairs.

I would like to be able to use my BB from anywhere within the house via my laptop and of course be able to access the net from the PC upstairs, and also possibly access the PC upstairs from my laptop also.

I've not bought any equipment yet, I was hoping you can all help me out - tell me what I need to buy, where to get the best deal and finally how to configure all that lot.

Finally, is there any security issues associated with this? Is it firewalled? Do I need to do anything additional so that my IBB Breeze connection is for my use and my use only?

    Many thanks.

[edit] my new laptop has wireless and bluetooth, the PC has nothing other than USB ports [/edit]

There are a multitude of threads on this topic including some active right now....
    Have a good search.

    Anyhew: some quick answers.

Firewalled: most Wireless APs / Routers have a built in firewall. They can be quite good but as a secondary line of resitance grab a free personal firewall like ZoneAlarm. This will not protect you from spyware or viruses so get a virus scanner and use tools like Ad-Aware and Spybot regularly to keep the vermin out.

Security: You should enable encryption in your network if you are in an urban area to prevent people connecting and using you bandwidth for free. Also restrict the MAC addresses that have access to your AP. (To do this you need to READ the manual that will come with your AP). WPA (non Pre Shared Key) is probably the encyption method of choice.

Your IBB connection to your wireless AP / router will need to be via an ethernet cable.

If ever there was a case for the Boards Knowledgebase, than this topic is it!
