I know how to play but would they be at all patient in one of the casinos??? Would need one or two hands before i was up to speed on the Ante's - would this be tolerated at all or what should I do?

If you head into any of the casinos a little early (say 8pm for 8.30 tournament) there would always be someone there who would give you a quick rundown of blinds/antes/rules. Or alternatively just play a single table tournament. There are very good for practice and most of the time the players are friendly and will help you along. you'll get the hang of it fairly fast. If anyone does give out just say F*&k off, that usually works.

Post up here the first night you are heading in (most and I stress most, play in the Fitz) and I'm sure someone on boards would be willing to go in early and meet you and show you the ropes.

the free-roll in the fitzwilliam on thursday around 8.30 and sunday at 6 is your best option. Doesnt cost anything to begin so take it real tight for the first few rounds of the table till you get used to it. Always new ppl starting in the free-roll who dont know the setup so everyone will understand if u have any problems. If you do lose your chips early u can buy in for a tenner which is cheap.

One thing that came up last night was this:

If you get a "free" drink off a waitress please tip them, approx 1 euro is the norm. You dont have to use them, you can help yourself upstairs, in the Fitz. They make feck all in wages and work hard.

Second, if someone is being a miserable, whinging b0llocx dont worry as they are probably like that anyway - its not you.

Take "How to" advice from the regulars, except when it comes to actually playing your cards. If we were all that great we'd be pro in vegas.

If your unsure ask the dealer.

    Good Luck

My experience of the Fitz has been nothing but pleasurable. I went in there for the first time just over a month ago and now i'm always the dealer at the table and have been finishing well for the past two weeks.
Everyone is very helpful. Watch out for a couple of obnoxious auls lads in there. You'll soon realize it's the **** players who whinge and aren't understanding of new players.
One quick thing to avoid( and it happens most people their first time) is string betting. Look up the sticky thread for more information.

Do read up a bit before you go in. In fact read all you can. And be prepared to fold nearly every hand. Remember your Q2o is not gonna stand up 10 handed.

But don't be intimidated at all. A friend of mine came in with me last night quite nervous and was shocked by the good humoured atmosphere in there.
    And definitelytip the waitresses!!!

I think that was me. I asked one of the girls for a glass of water during the 50 holdem cash game because i could hardly speak my throat was so bad. I havent been in the fitz very often before yesterday and it was my first time playing a live cash game so i wasnt up to speed on the protocol. The first couple of hands i won i forgot to tip the dealer at all. I copped on after a while and wont be making either mistake again.

Dont worry. It wasn't you. It was nobody in particular. I was at a table in the freeroll and about six were new players and all got a drink (not water) and nobody tipped. I made the point at the table that next time they should. It was advice not a telling off. In a freeroll your going to get people who have never been to the Fitz and dont know the "way things are done". This includes the betting, folding in turn etc.

It was advice for all not admonishment.

BTW If you forget to tip the dealer in the cash game you can tip them later when you remember, just say "Sorry I forget to tip after that pot a few hands back". A friendly dealer is a good thing!

    Thanks for that Georgey!!!

Thanks all for the advice. I'm gonna give The Fitz a try some night - it'll be a few weeks away though. Until then I will do a bit of reading up, I reckon I'd be okay but it would deffo take a few hands to get me going. Would not have even thought about tipping the dealer though, the waitress yes as I'm used to casinos!

    Thanks again folks!

The freeroll on a Saturday would be your best bet,not many people around as the club is just open. And it has about 40 players these days (which is small)
