Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

There was a guy on the radio talking about a monorail as a solution to travel into Dublin. It apparently is cheaper to build than regular rail lines and can be raised with little impact on land they travel through.
Doesn't sound like a bad idea. Even suggested maybe putting the lines above the canals.

It'll put Dublin on the map - just like Ogdenville, North Haverbrook, and Brockway!

    The Monorail Song

Lyle Lanley: Well, sir, there's nothing on earth
    Like a genuine,
    Bona fide,
    Electrified,
    Six-car
    Monorail! ...
    What'd I say?
    Ned Flanders: Monorail!
    Lyle Lanley: What's it called?
    Patty+Selma: Monorail!
    Lyle Lanley: That's right! Monorail!
[crowd chants `Monorail' softly and rhythmically]
Miss Hoover: I hear those things are awfully loud...
Lyle Lanley: It glides as softly as a cloud.
Apu: Is there a chance the track could bend?
Lyle Lanley: Not on your life, my Hindu friend.
Barney: What about us brain-dead slobs?
Lyle Lanley: You'll all be given cushy jobs.
Abe: Were you sent here by the devil?
Lyle Lanley: No, good sir, I'm on the level.
Wiggum: The ring came off my pudding can.
Lyle Lanley: Take my pen knife, my good man.
    I swear it's Springfield's only choice...
Throw up your hands and raise your voice!
    All: [singing] Monorail!
    Lyle Lanley: What's it called?
    All: Monorail!
    Lyle Lanley: Once again...
    All: Monorail!
Marge: But Main Street's still all cracked and broken...
Bart: Sorry, Mom, the mob has spoken!
    All: [singing] Monorail!
    Monorail!
    Monorail!
    [big finish]
    Monorail!
    Homer: Mono... D'oh!

Ridiculous idea! MAybe they could buy the one in Disneyland on the cheap!

Given that the powers that be won't allow high rise in Dublin (much to the delight of land owners within a 100km range of Dublin) or even overhead signage on our roads, I can't imagine them accepting a "luas on stilts" on a grand scale. If they accepting the idea of elevated rail lines they may as well go the whole hog and go for heavy rail lines as in Japan.

Not impossible. Alton Towers monorail was originally in Canada

For those too lazy to click the link -

You can't pick up a subway system and move it across the planet. In that respect, light rail isn't very mobile either. But it's not a problem with monorail. The track is modular, easily transported and the pylons do not require a lot of ground work if moved. These Von Roll II trains now carry passengers from a remote parking lot to the entrance of this popular park in England, but they once carried thousands of passengers at Expo 86 in Vancouver, Canada. The seven trains carry up to 100 people each. System capacity is 4,800 passengers per hour. Top speed of this peoplemover class system is 27 kph. The monorail system was officially opened by William Shatner (Captain Kirk of Star Trek) on August 13, 1987.

The monorail people seem to be taking maglev pretty seriously. China has adopted the technology and is rolling out several "maglev monorails".

When i was in Vegas i was very impressed by the monorail there!! I decided if i had money i would build one in dublin.. I dont so no monorail!!

Anyway They are nothing but a concrete track and the train itself uses tyres like a truck to move around it.. Its fast because there is no traffic.. and cheaper than an underground.

There are places like Germany and Japan that have them.. google it.. many types but the one in vegas is a great one i think.

How about going the whole hog and building A Maglev system, very quite extremly fast and well as of for cost as every thing is so damn expensive here it shouldnt be more dearer than any other system. They did it in Shanghai for their Airport, i couldn't see why it wouldn't work here. And for Mick Leary and the Dublin airport 2nd Terminal why not just build a new airport say somewhere like Leitrim or Longford and build a Maglev to it from Dublin City Center, Check in Somewhere in the City Center and zoom out to the New Airport in 15mins at 300kms to 400kms on the maglev, and who going to complain about airport noise etc in any of these places excpet maybe a few sheep. Its not a pipedream it will happen, maybe not now but proabally around the middle of the century,

    Regards netwhizkid

Excellent idea!! There aren't enough airports out that way. In fact you could have regular commuter flights between the new airport and Knock, Shannon, Galway, Sligo Donegal, Kerry etc. After all, the Western Rail Corridor won't have enough capacity for all the demand placed on it by all those commuting students :D
