Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Wireless setup in house?

I want to setup a wireless network in my house, but I am unsure if it will work as all the walls downstairs are made of block. I also want to do the same setup in a friend’s house and his house has solid block walls and a concrete 1st floor.

Will a wireless network work ok in these conditions? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Short answer. Probably but you might have to be careful where you place the wireless router.

Try placing it as close to the center of the house, near the stairs.

Infact i have heard stories of some insulation causing more problems than solid walls.

Not sure how powerfull the standard eircom wireless modems are but there are more powerfull ones available.

Also the newer g version tends to provide better results.

I have my wireless router in my bedroom and my pc hooked up directly via network cable. There is another PC in another room practically at the opposite corner of the house hooked up with a wireless card and it works grand. I guess though it depends on a variety of factors but brick walls shouldn't be a big deal. I'm going to set up a file server in my attic too via wireless and don't envisage any problems.

I'm using a netgear wireless router with netgear wireless pci cards (108 mbps version).

I am told that they should work fine.

However, i think you are using one of the "pre-n" routers. IE an unapproved standard and it may not work with all cards.

If you are having trouble connecting on a particular machine, check the type of card you are using first.

The good news is that the new systems are very good at amplifying signals and tend to travel further.

Many thanks for the replies lads! Could you recommend what would be the best wireless router & cards to go for?

I'm using the 3Com OC Wireless Gateway kit 54 Mbps 802.11g, purchased from Komplett.ie and have had no problems with it..... see previous thread.
I have it cabled to 2 PC's and an XBox, also two wireless connections; one in the attic bedroom and the other to an neighbouring house and both have about two thirds strength signal which is more than ample for internet connection.
