Just wondering if anyone else had other courses they wish they'd chosen, etc. or if everyone is happy with what they're doing?

I myself really enjoy my course, CSLL(Irish), but i'd have loved to be able to do some other subjects, namely German, English, History, Politics, Engineering. Isn't it a shame i can't afford to stay on to do multiple degrees.

    How bout yous?

Anything that doesnt' involve sitting in front of a PC for 8 hours a day.

Probably architectural design or property something or other ....

English and music under TSM, most likely.

Dunno really.. Had some crazy idea to do biochem or microbiology here but found I preferred physics.

Wouldn't have minded giving engineering a shot. Similarish to what I do now and at least all I'd need is a degree to get a job in that field..

Journalism in DCU if I had the aptitude, I love writing, pity I'm not very good at it.

Never knew really what i wanted leaving school - had loads of ideas growing up though. Always liked music and drumming, but never had the confidence to do it. Was in a marching band when i was about 14 or 15 for about 6mths. Then i left.

Leaving school, i decided to go for the Gardai as it was a 'stable' job but also gave me scope to change once i was on the force due to the varied roles the Gardai play. Of course i had to have back-up plans and tried mechanics - Did insurance for a while - Went doing merchandising recently and am now office based again. The Gardai fell thru cos of my eyesight and the laser treatment didnt go to plan. However ive applied for the Gardai again and might get in.

I regret not going to college and am thinking of going if i dont get into the Gardai. I only applied the 2nd time round so as to have something under me cos im gettin on a bit and feel ill be left behind. Everyone else i know has a trade or qualification. Im kinda hoping i dont get the Garadi cos i wanna travel a bit, but i wanna get a qulaification b4 i go travelling but dont wanna go travelling when im 30+, wanna do it now when im young and thick !!! Im gonna go study music performance if i can get to a standard so that i can perform for an audition.

So there's my regrets - - - bit long winded and slightly off-topic - but nice to get it out !

I feel like the last 6 years of my life have been a big waste.

Well, having started out in Theoretical Physics and ended up in Engineering I have no idea what I would have studied if I wasn't studying what I'm presently studying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,278 ✭✭✭kenmc

If I didn't become I SW engineer, I would like to be:
    Architecht.
    Brewer.
    Carpenter/CabinetMaker.
    Chef.
    Electricians make HUGE money.

Oh, This is a good question. There's loads of things I'd like to study. I would've liked to try T/P, History of Art, Philosophy.

No, I wouldn't change what has happened, I'd start TP again and then transfer in late. I still do plan to get my head around special relativity by the end of my time here though

Yeah I would have liked to do CA in DCU. I'd reckon i'd do well with an eng degree too.

In terms of arts, I'd love to have a go at classics ( languages / history) and archeology. Even Theology and Bibilcal Studies maybe.

im doing Mechanical Engineering Degree at DKIT. Im 100% happy with it. But if I had to pick a different couse it would be Cheffing. love making food!!! and eating it :-)

Doing science, but wouldn't mind pscychology/sociology.

Equations can be interesting, but studying what people are about would be fascinating.

Maybe journalism in the future, i love talking to people, getting their life stories and trying to figure out what makes them think!

Something in music but not academic music, I reckon having to sit and dissect experimental music would kill off any love I have for weird music. My friend is doing sound engineering and it sounds fascinating.

    Sounds like sound stuff.....;)

    You could do sociophysics.

On another note: You wouldn't happen to have been the secretary of the physoc at any time would you cuckoo?

Yup, in what feels like a galaxy in a far away place, and a long time ago - a couple of years ago. That was the year the logo was changed to the current one.

I'm off books this year, but i've seen some interesting looking posters for physoc as i wonder through campus.

    sociophysics = stats = eek!

Actually, i wonder how many people have had yearning thoughts of other courses as a result of their involvement in college clubs and societies? Long stretch here, but do member of the rifle club start thinking about the defence forces? Sports club heads PE teaching? Voluntary tuition souls of patience a HDip?

To be honest I like my course.

But if I was forced to do anything it would probably be English and Music.

My original direction (around JC time) was Computer Apps in DCU. Then I shifted toward journalism/media studies of some sort. Then I eventually arrived at law. If I could do it all again, I'd ignore all of the above and do a made-up course in history, sociology and Irish. Or (if I had to live in the real world), a TSM combination of some of the above...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,452 ✭✭✭Time Magazine

Oh yeah law would be good.

nah, OT is alot more broad, you can specialise in absolutely anything (eg from acute mental health, orthotics, traumatic brain injuiry, from geriatrics to paediatrics, learning disabilities, assistive technology for the disabled, or working in a prison/ nursing home/ private practise/ schools...) Maybe pt, but probably not as its not as broad as OT and dosn't offer as many choices. we get paid the same salary anyhow.

Hrm what would I do...well I used to think I'd do something like psychology if I wasnt studying science. But nowadays I think it would be photography or something creative and artsy like that! I do really want to do astrophysics (if i get a place  ), but sometimes I wonder what I'd be my life would be like if I had pursued my interest in taking random abstract photos :)

socio/econo-physics is a very debatable area - there is a good base in the area in the physics dept in college, but the whole area has huge doubts over whether it is even valid...

Law would be fun ... or journalism in DCU ... or being the King of Tory Island (http://www.littleireland.ie/patsydanrodgers/KingofTory.htm)

Spec rel is handy.. We do it in second year as a small part of our mechanics course.

Haven't needed it so far in JS though.. It's not one of those incredibly useful crossover concepts
