Its related to your post count. I'm not sure of the numbers exactly, but over a certain amount of posts = more stars.

Also moderators have more stars (4 I believe) as default. Admins have five gold stars. Subscribers (like me) have one extra star than normal, and they're pink.

subscriber afaik, although there was confusion when they first did it, some lads were italics.
