Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi all, I'm interested in buying a property in this area - in the Fernleigh Development to be specific.

I myself am not from Dublin, and I really only know areas around UCD well (having gone to college there... and doing a PhD there now).

So what I'd like to know:

    1. General impressions of the area.

    2. Crime?

    3. Traffic / Public Transport

    4. Amenities (Shops, Parks, Schools etc)

Any other relevant comments would be greatly appreciated.

Ahh you'll be just around the corner from me :D
Nice estate filled with young professionals and a few kids. You've got the train station 5 minutes walk away, a pub/chipper/small shopping centre 5 minutes the other direction and the Blanchardstown Shopping Centre is about 10 minutes drive from Fernleigh. Not much crime around that area as its a pretty new estate and I have'nt had any trouble there anyway.
If you decide to move give us a shout and I'll show you the local!

I live near where you thinking of buying a place. I wouldn't bother with the 37. Get the train. You would be in Connolly station in 20-25 mins.

I haven't got the 37 in ages but I would imagine your talking 40mins.

The carpenter pub is really nice, but its all young couples. The food is really nice there and there was some really cute lounge girls working there. The ones over 18 of course!!

Its a nice enough area, there are a few annoying scumbag wannabe teenagers but they are harmless. Its a decent area.

I know somebody who will be selling a place in Fernleigh in the next couple months.

Thanks for all that. We've gone sale agreed actually.

Well for the time being (until I finish my PhD) I'll be trekking over to UCD.

The 37X goes direct to UCD as well. Just wondering what I'm going to be looking at in the mornings.

In the mornings the 37 will take quite a bit of time to get into town.
Walk 5 mins to Coolmine trainstation and from there to Connolly is less than 20 minutes.

It's a decent enough area with the odd few shams hanging around the shops.

The other option is to cycle....

Could be bit long all the way to UCD.

Congrats on the house! I'd say your talking 3 days and 3 nights for the 37x to get to UCD in the mornings. Bring a packed lunch...............dinner, breaky!!!

    Cycling would be horrible.
Just get the train from Coolmine into town it's handy

OK, so say I save twenty minute by getting the train. I still have to get back from Connoly to O'Connel St to get a 10 or something. The beauty of the 37X is I can sit my arse down and play my DS.

On the cylcing - it could be daunting - but I could afford to lose some weight. I previously cycled from Balinteer to UCD on a daily basis - wasn't too bad. Haven't quite figured out the distances yet though.

The other options is I take the car and my GF has to make her own way to Chapelizod for work. (well I could drop her in the mornigns - but in the evening I might not get back to pick her up for ages).

Do a test run. Do you have any weekdays off?

I wouldn't mind the gf, let her walk!!! (kidding) Chapelizod is not far from carpenterstown. I have done it lots!!

What you could do is get the train to connolly and cycle from there. However, good luck trying to convince the other sardines that there is room for a bike aswell.

Cycling would be good to lose weight alright but you would almost certainly be killed within 15 minutes of leaving the house. You could get the train from Coolmine to Connolly and then a Dart to a station near UCD, then maybe a bus (I know someone who does it, but if you need details I can have them for you by monday)

Its not as bad as it sounds, once you get off the first train theres a dart within minutes, and as far as I know you can get a monthly bus/train pass for not much more than what the 37/37x would cost you each day.
