Does anyone know much about this type of hosting? I've got a JSP based website that seems to be a little bit too heavy for a shared server and I came across these as an alternative to a dedicated solution.

    http://www.quantact.com/plans.shtml

To be honest it looks a little bit too good to be true for the lower plans. Is it?

Anyone know what level of support to expect? Do you just get a vanilla OS install or can you request installations and configuration of certain software (Apache, DNS, email etc).

    Anyone in Ireland doing this?

There are some differences between a VPS and a UML, but in a lot of cases the difference is neglible.

A VPS is often geared towards people who want some of the freedom of a dedicated server but do not have the technical experience to manage a vanilla install. In a lot of cases a VPS would be running some flavour of redhat.

A UML (http://www.usermodelinux.org/) would often be offered as a plain shell login with full root access.

If you do a search for it on Google you'll find who offers it in Ireland:

And don't forget that your CPU is still shared, as it is with virtual hosting.. so VPS/UML hosting is really more geared towards control/customisation needs rather than resources.. So if you reckon the minimum guaranteed VPS/UML CPU time is enough then go for it, but you might find better dedicated machines for the same price.

I'll only be running a single website off it on Tomcat. It's not even that busy to be honest, it's just that I can't find a proper host that'll do it for me at the right price.

I like the level of control I'd get too on a VPS/UML server.

Do you reckon one of the starter packs with 64MB RAM would be enough to run Tomcat?

    Thanks for everything!
