AMP & Speakers recommendations for small one person office

Hey Guys,

I work in a small one person office in the west of Ireland. I work by myself & like to listen to music all day - it keeps the sanity in check.

I'm converting my CD to MP3s. I want to get recommendations for a AMP & speakers that I can hook up to my Mini Mac.

The issues are:
The office has neighbour offices through light walls. So I need good quality music at low levels.
I don't have that much to spend, would like to spend €300 but would go higher if I need to.

I'm looking to get some kit that will be a pleasure to listen to - can anyone recommend a AMP & speakers?

I use Harmon Kardon Sound Sticks - they are pretty good, and work well at low volume. They look the part also!

I use these http://www.turnkey.co.uk/tkweb/stockdetail.jsp?sku=TAPC-S8&context=WEB ....purely for vinyl playing though.

Lumps right about the compressed music though, the better the speakers you get the worse your sound will become.

Lump - I'm encoding at 192kbs - I'm hope that this will give a good enough reproduction - is this in vain?

Yes it is in vain, it'll sound fine through speakers. But no point in spending €5000 on a set of speakers.

If you buy the ones Clank suggests, being "Active" they don't require an amp.

Ah missed the 'active' bit - does each speaker need to be plugged in to the mains - I imagine it does?
