    Please say you're joking?!? DIRE!

'The Office' wins out in my books as the best BBC comedy... simply on the fact it remained consistent through the 2 seasons and the Xmas special. Unlike 'Only Fools And Horses', 'Blackadder', 'Red Dwarf' etc.

    Little Britain
Ooo, someone else voted for Brittas Empire - I was convinced I was the only person who ever liked that show.

I'm not actually. I really enjoy this. I would suggest adding it to the poll and see who else likes it

I thought the Brittas Empire was great but it wasn't something I went around admitting to. Till now :D

I always thought 'The Brittas Empire' was great when i was younger.

Never missed an episode. Chris Barrie was just perfect in that role!

Yep it was top $. One of the most memorable scenes was Tubbs suckling the piglet

    Red Dwarf
erm, it really has to be Monty Python. I was about to suggest that it be taken from the list because it's just so obvious, but I seem to be the only person (so far) to have voted for it. Strange that.

edit - League of Gentlemen film film is on the way, and it looks ****ing class!

    Dead Ringers
Red Dwarf is definitely my favourite, but Blackadder II was the best comedy to come from the BBC ever - brutally funny! Python was also fantastic.

Also, wheres Fawlty Towers and Yes Minister?! Both of them are absolutely superb, far better than drivel like 2 pints of Lager or Little Britian....

Fawlty Towers bitch slaps everything else.

    Red Dwarf
Fawlty Towers, Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin, The Good Life, Open All Hours, Are You Being Served?, The Young Ones, Filthy Rich & Catflap, Citizen Smith, Porrige and The Goodies.

All favourites from my childhood... Yes I am old... and yes I was a tv addict! :D

    Red Dwarf
    Others worth mentioning are:

    The Day Today
    Friday Night Armistice
This Morning With Richard Not Judy
    The Smoking Room
    Nighty Night
    Bruiser...

i'd like to give a shoutout to citizen smith, what a great show, never got recognition it deserved in my opinion, it was overshadowed somewhat by all the other great bbc sitcoms of the period i imagine, didnt even make it onto top 50 sitcoms las year on bbc 2, and to think that awful show about the female vicar (dawn french) made it to the top 10, krazyyyy....

    Only Fools and Horses
how did My Family get on the list before Fawlty Towers?

the latter is for me the best comedy ever made by the BBC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

    The Office
I've never understood why anyone, anywhere laughed at My Family.

Where the **** is Porridge? Ronnie Barker at his finest.

  • Registered Users Posts: 455 ✭✭penguinbloke

    Dead Ringers
    bottom was brilliant as well.

might have aged badly though. I really enjoyed the Brittas Empire ages ago but I saw it on Bravo ?? a week or two ago and it just wasn't funny.

    Pesky Nostalgia

    Dead Ringers
What!?? No One foot in the Grave??
[insert stupid "I don't believe it..." joke]

2pints is sh*te; pure and utter, but nowhere as bad as My Family.
[edit] Oh yeah and Coupling is a load of b0ll0cks too
No Naked Video? No Harry Enfield show? OK they're not drama perse but...

TBH I have to say Blackadder(2/3) and Red Dwarf (not necessarily in that order) but the Young Ones come a close 3rd.

Lastly Some mother's do 'ave 'em :D ....poll's not nearly long enough. There's prolly a load more missing too...

    Brittas Empire
blackadder is by far the funniest thing ever to come out of the bbc - rowan atkinson at his best. all the characters were hilarious and the ending to the final series was poignant and intelligent. anyone who thinks that 2 pints or even the royle family come close has no taste!

    Dead Ringers
    Some more to consider.

Citizen Smith - POWER TO THE PEOPLE !

Steptoe and Son - the episode where they split the house in two

Yes Minister - "rigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertanty"

    Boys from the Blackstuff

    Up Pompeii

    One foot in the grave

    Rab C. Nesbitt

    Some mothers do 'ave 'em

    Sykes (some episodes)

    Butterflies

Maid Marian And Her Merry Men / Basil Brush

If Deadringer is allowed then Mike Yarwood / Morcome and Wise / Dave What'sisname..

    A Very Peculiar Practice

Even The likely lads & liver birds beat some of the series in the poll

Terry And June - only mentioning it because it shows just how good he was in Dangermouse

    cf. http://www.davebudd.org.uk/sitcom/all - sitcom list

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

    Brittas Empire

    Boys from the Blackstuff

    *cough* black comedy then.....

Whatever Happened to The Likely Lads was a classic even better than the origional series.

    Mike.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

    Boys from the Blackstuff

    Hardly qualifies.

The 'Play for Today' episode ('The BlackStuff') on which the show is based was fairly funny but the actual 5 part show itself could in no way be described as comedy (black or otherwise) IMHO.

'Peep Show' is Channel 4 though!

Still can't believe anyone watches '2 Pints Of Lager..' - possibly some of the worst writing on a comedy series! Close behind 'Coupling'

maybe I'm getting mixed up with the half hour terror tales or are they C4 too. But it's worth a mention anyway. as is this other little known C4 gem http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/tv/microsites/E/estateagents/episode02/rehears01.html

    and "My Family" does somehow..

My Family is a comedy series (an unbelievably unfunny one) but one none the less. BFBS is a drama series with the odd funny line/scene sprinkled in what is on the whole rather grim stuff.

I (like youself presumably?) have probably got more laughs out of BFBS than MF but it still doesn't change my opinion on what consitutes 'a comedy show'.

For example, one might find the BBC's 9'O'Clock news to be the funniest thing ever (who knows, there's a lot of oddballs out there!) ... but it still doesn't make it a BBC comedy show IMHO.

    Red Dwarf
My fave is The Fast Show, though from the list, I chose Monty Python.

I also liked Men Behaving Badly while it ran, and Game On (Mmm, Samantha Janus mmmm)

    Red Dwarf
Monty Python, Monty Python, Monty Python.

Followed by Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, The League of Gentlemen, The Day Today & Brasseye.

Yes, Minister, Yes, Prime Minister and the fall and rise of Reginald Perrin from the oldies.

    And Porridge.

Oh, and the old Red Dwarf.
