Just built a new PC. Still have old one with new blank hard drive and no OS. I want to put a free OS on it and give it to a friend. Is it possible to download Linux or other free OS from the net to my new PC, and put it on a CDR and install it on old PC keeping windows XP on new PC? Any help would be cool.

ftp.esat.net mirrors all the major linux distributions and is super fast.

What you're looking for is an i386 based .iso file

I recommend getting filezilla (link in free software sticky) first as it supports resumed downloads.

Use something like nero to "create a boot cd from cd image". The ubuntu install is simple, checkout http://www.ubuntuguide.org

An alternative to downloading is http://www.celticlinux.worg.ie, they post the distro on cd-rs. You can also get distros free with linux magazines. Unless you have a fast Internet connection it can take a long time to download so this way might be handier.
