is it possible to mount a webcam over the back door connected to my wireless network and have some sort of storage disk plugged into the network also so when it detects motion it saves an image to the storage device

Possible but difficult. What power source would you use.

Better solutions available from people like maplins.

I have seen specialist machines, that have a small flash storage device, camera and powerered by a 9V battery and had motion detector and worked in the dark but they where about 200. I would look at the wired options in argos/maplins etc. they are not hard to install.

Do a search on Ebay for ip wireless camera. There a few models there that'll Email you images/upload them to webspace when they detect motion.
