I enjoyed reading all of that and I'm looking forward to the photographs.

Just a few old ones, my dad is the one standing by the flag! The dog belonged to someone at the Castle Hotel, he used to follow me down the beach every day I used to share me chips with him!

I love the wave picture, it looks like a painting with the light reflecting off the cliffs. The little girl is my sister, taken in the 60s you can see Castle Green just above her head and that's my brother playing in the sand behind her with his mate. Also the infamous 'missing' Lartigue Monorail, and lastly two I took on top of Knockanore which are stuck together badly I know, I was only a kid when I took them!
Anyways that's all for now, unless I find some hidden away! I've just booked my ticket, so I'll be over in two weeks and hopefully taking a lot more that are better!

And hello to you CherryTree by the way! How's things in Listowel? If you see a girl with very long brown hair and a big camera around the place come over and say hello!

    Good Luck All:D

. Wonderful photos. I think the following photo of yours is just great.
Even the droplets of sea water on the camera lens.

If you don't go for a swim go for a 'paddle'.
Now that you have read the forum threads and seen some up to date photos it may not seem that strange after all these years.
Enjoy your visit and get home safe.

I see one of the Boscoes son here in Rhinebeck now and then
    Regards from SANDHILLROAD

PS; I could do with some sausages and chips with malt vinegar now !

welcome to the thread, LondonLass. I am only a blow-in here myself (and into Ballyb too!)

Those pics were great! thanks for that. Looking forward to what you will see & post when you do your Return To Roots Tour soon.

The Lartigue monorail is gone now, but there is a full size working replica in Listowel, complete with 100m of track. For a small fee you can ride in the carrige and the lovely green engine will pull you down the track and back!

As for the tides, I do believe they were the highest predicted in many years, but thankfully we didnt have any wind with them, or the water would easily be up to the footpath on the Ladies Beach. Or into the Sea & Cliff rescue building as happened a few years ago (that might have been in '93 a'right)

there are plans to build a hotel on the site of the old castle hotel, but nothing (physical) has happened yet. Last I heard, the plans were finally approved!

The new sports centre on Kit Ahern Road (the old 'New Road' or 'Ring Road') is progressing. They are up to the roof now. I will try and get a pic tomorrow.

And finally..... I havnt forgotten my promise to get pics of locals and a video of the drive in from Ahafona cross to the middle of town! It coming! I promise!!!! lol

    Hello All,
I am so excited to see that recent picture of the cliffs I can tell you! I can't wait to be standing there myself! I just hope the weather is as good!

I love your paint job Sandhill by the way!

Talking of the Sea & Cliff Rescue building, I can remember when I was there in the 90s I watched them do a practice rescue with a helicopter from a little boat way out. They winched a fella down to it, and then he brought another fella up with him and then they landed behind the Castle Hotel!

Anyways I'll go now, I shouldn't be up at this late hour in London! I'm over excited I suppose! I never felt more peaceful and happy in myself than when I have been at home. No matter how long the time is between visits, when I am there I have a feeling of contentment which I can't explain. Maybe it's because I am in London and the only field near me is about to have a school built on it, and the sea is too far away for me to taste the salt on my lips!

Now I'll stop going on with my ramblings! I'll never get up for work in the morning, I've only five hours sleep as it is!

Good Night And Good Luck To All :)

My brothers, sisters, mother and I were in BB one year ago this September. My mother had last been here with my father who passed away in 2001. We'd heard about BB all our lives as my mother's family, the Beasleys (Beazleys in the States) came from BB and Timoleague. It was the trip of a lifetime and we all have fond memories. My mother was able to see all the places her grandfather, Benjamin Beazley, had told them about when they were little girls. We all live in the Chicago area now, but dream of going back with our children someday. This thread has been alot of fun to follow and brings back all the wonderful memories of our first (definitely only the first) visit to BB. Thank you all.

My Granda showed me where he hid in the cliff caves as a young IRA man, back in the day. He said if the tide caught you inside the cave you had to wait it out until next low tide.:

Anyone from Ballyb got video of the high tides this week ?
Heard they are 20 year things.
Was told you could walk from the ladies strand back to the nuns and walk into the 9 daughters.

....and because we are not biased in Ballyb (well, no more than normal, anyway :) ) ... here are a couple of pics of the beach at Beal last Sunday (courtesy of my son and his new camera)

looking west, down the Shannon (ballyb is around the corner):

    hullo PriceofaPint!
yes, I think there were a couple of minutes during which it was possible to walk from Ladies beach to Nuns Strand (at max low tide). Access to 9 Daughters was a bit longer.

Sorry, I dont have a video.

Hello all.... I'm just wondering how long it might take to travel by taxi from Kerry Airport to Ballybunion, and also, if anyone has any idea how much it would cost?! Thanks!

    J.

Thanks RIDER and to your son for the pictures of Beal.
Hope you get to Listowel Races. I am sure Ballybunion is as busy.

    c011.gif

All right, everybody, sit down, sit down. A standing ovation is not necessary. c033.gif

Look at this. I leave for a couple weeks and a whole bunch of new people show up and join the thread. If my ego weren't so healthy I might be offended by that "coincidence."

I'll have to start reading and catch up with the rest of you.

    Hallo All,
Good luck to the man who dares to go from Ladie's Beach to Nun's Strand! I don't think I'd risk it! I remember going into that first cave on the Ladie's Beach there on the right, and we wedged an old drinks carton about two metres up in a crack in the wall, and the next day it was gone! That's when I knew my dad wasn't lying about those tides!

Great pictures RIder & Son by the way, the sports centre is a shock I must say! But the pictures of the views are great, when I was a kid my dad took me down onto Beal Strand with the car and let me drive round on the sand! It was great fun until I tried to go up to second gear and stalled it! I always remember there was always loads of crabs all over the place round there with big red claws on them. Are there still loads of them there? I'll find out soon enough I suppose.

    Cheers :)

Indeed.... got a quote for a taxi from Farranfore to Ballybunion - e60! Rental car costs e55 for one day, but unfortunately still on a provisional. Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions as regards minibus etc that might run between Farranfore and Ballybunion I'd be grateful for any suggestions. Seems like Ballybunion is just out of bounds transport-wise on weekends. No bus either.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,132 ✭✭✭RiderOnTheStorm

i am sure there is a bus from Farnfore to Tralee, and there is then a bus from Tralee to Ballybunion. Cant guess the waiting time for 'connection' though, lol.
Once you get to Tralee, you could hitchhike to Ballyb. Revive an old tradition! Tralee is on the way from Farnfore to Ballyb anyway.... and only about 20 mins anyway, so you wont be stuck with any wierdos for too long!

    hope you make it!

    Kerry Placenames Survey

This survey was established by Dr Eamon Lankford in 1996 to collect placenames and preserve the history and heritage that they represent "before they are lost forever".

Field maps of a townland are distributed through the school system and made available to parents and grandparents. All places with names are indicated on the maps and this information is supplemented with surveys by graduates during the summer months.

Dr Lankford believes that this methodology improves on that used by the Ordnance Survey in the 1830s and 1840s when the surveyorsoften relied on Protestant clergy and other non-locals for their placename information. He notes in the article "Collecting all the placenames under the sun" (Irish Times 14.2.03) "In the 1840s just three names were were collected by the OS in the survey of Currahys in the Muskerry Gaeltacht. In the Lankford survey 160 years later, 260 names had been collected."

The names of field boundaries, rocks, hill slopes, inlets, submerged rocks and so on are being collected. As Mr O Cuiv, Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs in the Republic of Ireland says, placenames "...tell us so much about ourselves, our heritage and our culture". They must not be allowed to decline.
