Hello there, WOW THANKS for the wonderful 'snaps' of the beautiful sea and beach and also the street at Christmas. They take us back to our childhood! There's some railing or steelbars on the photo of the street either on the pink house or the one next to it - is that ocarrolls shop? tis such a shame to see that on such a lovely photo?
what house is this on - does anybody know? Thanks for the memories and delighted to see ballyb - this site is th best...

your version may have been true a few years ago but thankfully not any more.

    Really???

Must have changed dramatically over the last year so!

Just joined Ballybunion thread after finding it this morning. :) Can answer a few questions going back sometime (they may have been responded to already - I may have missed a few entries - I'm very new to this).

There is a school between the Garda Station and Ahafona. It's the Boys School. The National School in Doon Road is too small so when the boys are about 7, they leave the NS and go to the Boys School. Plans are afoot to build a new school comples next to the church, starting this year, and then all the children will be educated together.

It is opposite the site of Keily's Ballroom. Someone requested the date at which that burnt down, will try to find it out if it's not already been answered. Trident Holiday cottages are now on that site - built 10 years ago.

The new road opposite the Garda Station is called Kit Ahern Road (named after a local politician). I remember the whole area as a field when I was a young holiday maker to Ballyb. The road swings around the back of the pubs and shops of Main Street from Mikey Joe's down, and comes out along the Sandhill Road. The new swimming pool complex is under construction at the far end near the junction with Sandhill Road. It may even be open this Bank Hol weekend, as was planned, but when I drove past two weeks ago I wasn't very hopeful!!

Deenihan's shop is now O'Donnell's and has been for about 15+ years.

I kind of agree with Sudz, some of the crowd coming into Ballyb during the Summer leaves a lot to be desired. I much prefer the place during quieter times and especially love walking the "Long Beach" between the Black Rocks aand the Cashen.

Thanks to all who contributed the photos - fantastic!!

Hopefully this thread will keep going.

I have to post this pic. A few months ago, on a cold winter evening I brought my niece to Ballybunion for a walk. I gave her my camera and she took this pic which I didn't see until yesterday. Pure luck, a lovely pic.

Well, another summer has arrived and got off to a great start as we had some truly warm sunny weather with highs of 25 to 26 degrees but just as soon as we got settled into it nature brought us back to earth with seemingly eternal rain, rain and more rain forecast though we live in hope as the old folk 'in the know' tell us that we are to get a good summer??! if anybody out there knows anything about the forecast, PLEASE let us know.
Sadly, the Castle still has not been repaired and looks as though it will remain the way it is. Good news though - the NEW LEISURE CENTRE IS OPEN YEAH!!! AND hopefully will be a big plus for the townspeople and visitors alike. a few have complained about the prices eur8. per hour for a swim but if its well kept, it will be a great asset. Not too many changes on the street really - pubs are the same as last year - the coffee shop/bistro which was Reubens last year - where Greaneys chemist was long ago - has been taken by the people who make the home made ice cream and while the ice cream is great sadly the sign and decoration isnt too tempting - its multicoloured and the Chairs are from McDonalds - tiny ones ... - but i'm sure the ice cream is wonderful - all we need is the sun!! The Ballybunion knitwear is under new ownership and appears to have wonderful array of stock with nice quality goods. , - also. the shop that was Souvenir shop seems to have been given a Facelift and wow!! some wonderful upmarket stock - .......Pottery - nice one... and HANDBAGS and Jewellery ...Local..and Super Valu is a great asset to the town with popular new owners., and Hanrhans have new menu which seems good so ... me thinks maybe Ballybunion should support local trade...? This town is innovative if not busy! Could somebody bring back the sun please!! The One Way traffic system (!) is apparently being put in place by the end of June - hard to know whether its a good thing or not - the town needs to see people coming in and the traffic warden (yeuch!) doesnt help a great deal. Just a wait and see situation but while the place is always wonderful - everything will be fine in the sunshine.. roll on those lazy hazy days of summer...
sorry!! anyway, the locals are up in arms as the main street is still in a very sorry state after all the digging done during springtime and the Kerry co council say that they cannot afford .......................to have it tarred until october........... Would this happen........... in Killarney??
This is the up to date bulletin from Ballyb by the sea to the best of my limited knowledge,,. ask the locals but they will be happy if the sun comes.
Herecomesthesummer la la la! here comes .......
    ok sorry being nerdy..!

I dont know if there are any plans to repair the castle, Blackrocks. After it was hit by lightening a while back, the top part of window was blown off (check old pics and new pics to see difference) and it was then made safe (rubble & loose stone removed, concrete and mortar placed on remaining stone). So, I suppose, its not actually in need of repair. There is a nice bridge over to the castle, and a good high rail/fence around it so that you cant fall out, and a good strong spotlight to light it up at night. Lovely.

I must try and get a pic of the new sports hall. I really love that there is a pool in town now!

I havnt forgotten my promise to get a video of a drive through town (main st), and I do have one, but it isnt great. I will post link to it in YouTube in a few mins.

    Hi Rider on the Storm
Thank u VERY MUCH for the drive through Ballyb! twas great and brilliant to see and to send to those who are not around the place.
I'd really love to see some of the places I mentioned earlier (since I'm not any good at doing the video thing myself - sorry!) but the good bits and those horrible railings and stuff would be great to see to hear the opinions of all the other brilliant people who love Ballyb!!What do you think of all the changes I was harpin on about?
This blog is the best thing ever - great to 'meet' all the people who love good old ballyb!! But can we not keep it good and at least a bit of the way it was. sorry for going on... time to button it!

Thank you RiderOnTheStorm for this great video. Looks like from all the cars that the town was busy, it's a tight squeeze driving on main street. Much appreciated
