A report released by EuroStat (the Statistical Office of the European Communities) shows details of Internet usage in the 25 EU Member States as well as Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Norway and Iceland (the report also covers broadband connections, e-commerce and e-government). This covers first quarter of 2004. Ireland didn't seem to provide any figures. I wonder why?

    Some findings:

    * About half of the population (47%) of individuals aged 16 to 74 used the internet.
    * More men (51%) than woman (43%) and more young people than old.
    * 89% of enterprises were using the internet and over half of those (53%) had a broadband connection.
    * Highest levels of usage by individuals were recorded in Sweden (82%), Denmark (76%) and Finland (70%) and lowest in Greece (20%), Hungary (28%), Lithuania, Poland and Portugal (all 29%).
    * Highest levels of usage by enterprises can be found in Denmark and Finland (both 97%), and in Belgium and Sweden (both 96%). The lowest levels were registered in Portugal (77%), Hungary (78%), Lithuania (81%), and Cyprus (82%).
    * The highest levels of broadband connection for enterprises were recorded in Denmark (80%), Sweden (75%) and Spain (72%)

    Full Report.

Perhaps we could stick in the more recent data from Ireland and then see how we rank. *Digs out the ComReg Trends Report*

page 4 shows a household broadband penetration comparison list.

Ireland has not at all caught up with 3 households out of 100 with bb. The country we were told to have overtaken, Luxembourg, has already a 16 % bb household connectivity. All according to these figures - which by the looks of it - are a poor job done with EU money.

article about broadband use here in finland in the local newspaper recently. here it is translated: "Number of broadband connections has doubled in 12 months"

one million broadband connections, not bad for a country of five million or there abouts. 38% of households have broadband.

Thanks for that informative article. And congratulation to the success.

Over 900 000 bb connections for 5 200 000 population, that is a broadband penetration of 17-18 connections per 100 inhabitants.

We are promised by eircom 500 000 connections, equivalent to a mere 12.5 bb connections per 100 inhabitants by the end of 2007!

And if this regulator is not kicked out or into action soon, even this will not be achieved.

So I guess, whoever got our card on the Galway broadband event should take a dark blue pencil and change Finland's colouring.
