Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

thats why you some times see a small 1 or 2 in the corner of the plate, which means its either the first of second replacement.

I overtook a car with a little 7 on the dash on the Ring Utrecht. I have to wonder how bad an area they live in to have lost 6 plates!

There was a problem with the cover but off course it will be sorted, when the engine went back in they put 2 shims between the engine and mounts as the sump was sitting on the rack so this dont help, but think there is enough adjustment in the bonnet to clear the rocker cover. The other option is to buy a SAH cover off ebay thats the angled one at each end but they go for mighty bucks, the last one that i saw went for 335 squid:eek:.Also the original metal type is not as deep as the alloy one so that is also an option.

The original metal one looks great if painted properly. Chroming is another option but it might look too 'bling' and it'll probably discolour from the heat. Speaking if underbonnet temperatures - is the manifold ceramic coated or just painted?

I can remember years back, I chromed my rocker cover and yes after a while they yellowed as such, personally I would go with the original, but I would say Alan will come up with something. It will be interesting to see what.

I think the manifold is painted in high temp, but again I am not sure. Maybe Alan or Niall would be able to answer that one.

Anyhow here is a short video clip, of the body and bonnet going on, it has music on it but sometimes youtube blank sound due to copy rights etc, so hope it works.

    Dutch?

    Definitely not Dutch.

Normal Dutch plates are Yellow with black letters, but classic cars can carry 'old style' Dark Blue plates with white letters.

We do have White license plates, but only for cars destined for Export with a 14 day temporary plate or trailers. So it could have a car exported from Holland, but as was pointed out, there's only one hyphen between the digits, but the biggest giveaway is that the script/typeface is distinctly different.

I suspect this is either a Chech or Hungarian or Romanian license plate, somewhere in that region... (althought they would normally always have a small national flag or symbol... )

My guess is Portuguese too. I remember from that huge barn find a few years ago that Dutch and Portuguese plates can look very similar, so Dutch wasn't a bad guess in the first place. Here's a good site with license plates.

Or maybe we will just have to wait until Silvera reads this and tells us for definite what it is :D

They're African imports IIRC, either that or Brazilian. The MK1 shape is still being sold new, although it has a modern interior etc. There was one for sale on carzone for around 11k up until recently. There is a name for them, but I can't for the life of me remember it.

It wasn't by any chance red?

I have checked my Interpol Guide to Vehicle Registration Plates and the only country that shows 2 sets of digits and numbers is Holland, so its possible the guy has made up his own plates. Any of the above mentioned countries, do not use two sets of double digits and a number.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 827 ✭✭✭PaulK_CCI

if it is a dutch plate, then it's pretty illegal in two ways,
    - for one it should be a yellow plate with black letters and not a white plate. Only export plates are white, and they carry 5 digit registration numbers with a completely different notation alltogether (2 digits, one letter and two more digits).
    - if it's a self made plate from an existing dutch license number, a quick check with the Dutch equivalent of cartell reveals that this reg number ain't registered anymore: so the license number would be invalid!

If it were a dutch reg, this particular letter combination would place the car as being 1st registered in Holland in november 1993. The car itself is from somewhere late seventies-mid eighties, and clearly a US import.

If the hyphen between the letter combinations is deliberate, then my money is on this being a home-made German plate i.e. no euroband, no seals, not using normal German plate fonts etc. - as earlier poster mentioned, this would make it a Bremen plate (HB = Hansestadt Bremen)

Yeah they used to be called Citi Golf but recently changed to just Citi. Apparently tooling came from the US plant in 1984 and the current interior is mostly from the Skoda Fabia.

I don't think they were ever made in Brazil (as some others suggested) as they have the Gol down there. It was built in Mexico as the Caribe (with gammy US-style square headlights) until 1987.

Having checked the guide again, I am inclined to agree with you, as this could possibly have been a personalized plate that would have been purchased.

Yes, a Porsche 356, and a pretty rare model too: the distinctly different Karmann Hardtop Coupe. Most 356 were built by Reuter, but Karmann built these Coupes with a higher roofline between 62-64.

Ya, I thought the roof was a bit high and upright alright. Cheers for the info Paul!

Cartell doesn't give a year for the Merc.
It identifies the steam engine as a 'Ransome'.

    The Merc's an '85 reg.

My Dad has an old Ransomes cylinder lawn mower (petrol, not steam engined ) - looks like they diversified before they ran out of, ahem, steam.

A few spots from today, all around Clontarf.

Stumbled upon this this lot while out canvassing tonight (72' MGB Roadster, late '80's Rubber Bumper Roadster, and a Pagoda i believe which was very rotten and looked like it was painted with a brush). I do not know whether or not they are abandoned, but sure have not moved in while.
