Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

how is a 50s Cork Number plate on a 70s Escort?

    It's possible.... But complicated....

Let's assume it's a UK import and that it was imported in the mid 80s, before they changed the plates to the current 87-D-123 style.
At the time it was possible to have an old number re-issued, if you could prove that it hadn't been used for at least 30 years. I know of someone that has a 70s Lotus with the plate Z1, same system.

Similarly, IF 205 is on a 1986 205 GTi and AFAIK is a much older number. Said car is now a rally car.

Saw this a week or two ago in town and then in Glasthule...

    IMG_1166_Small.jpg

This lives around the corner from me.
Not a classic in some peoples books I know, but a really nice example of a car I used to love.
    Hardly any about now.

Spotted this 2004 Mexican Beetle in Carrickmines earlier today:

    ABCD0008.jpg

Funny, the Type 1 Beetle finished production in 2003, this mustn't have been registered 'till the following year.

Although it's not really visible in the photo (I had the camera on maximum zoom), I did manage to get the reg. plate number on it: 04-L-3148.

    From Cartell:

    Registration 04L3148
    Make VOLKSWAGEN
    Model BEETLE
Description 1600I LEFT HAND DRIVE 2DR
    Fuel Type PETROL

That Beetle or a very similar one was in Arthur's Quay car park for years with "for sale" signs on it, along with a red one nearby. I only noticed they were gone last week though I don't park there often.

Saw a black '87 BMW E30 M3 today, sorry no pics :( . Not sure if it was a legit M3 but the gigantic wheelarches were certainly convincing.

Update on that garage in Toomevara - there's now three W124 saloons there, a Vauxhall Calibra and possibly something else of interest (was too dark to see the last time I passed the place).

E30 shell had torsional problems, genuine M3's had a 150mm wide raised band over the rear window to combat flex, also the boot lid extended the full width of the car, with the shut lines on the flanks as opposed to the std version which had a boot lid which was 40mm ish narrower that the rear end and shut lines on the horizontal surface.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,461 ✭✭✭Max_Damage

All E30 M3's were LHD too AFAIK.

There were a numberof E30 M3's converted to RHD by birds in the uk. Rear windscreen rake also improved aerodynamics as did the bootlid.

Then there's also the boxed out arches they had 5 stud wheels and many more things different

Thats the Ultima edicion, like this one. They are the final beetles made, although a blue one was the last built, complete with flowers on the bonnet, and even given a final salute by a Mexican Trumpet band, the VW Museum also has the last one which is white??

saw this car in Galway yesterday, was on US plates so I dont know if it was imported by someone locally or whether its tourists on holiday. Didnt get a picture but its exactly like this, right down to colour and wire wheels....

    1790900024_large.jpg

I think its a Brougham, the Fleetwood name was applied to smaller front wheel drive cars from 1985-1992 so Brougham was in use
to distinguish it from the other cars. It was the longest Cadillac in production from 1977-1992.
