Give it up for Ronnie Whelan, the haircut, the style, the goal of a decade for Ireland. Surely he demands recognition as a legend of the boards.

Is Ronnie Whelan fit enough to be a legend of boards? 22 votes

No from me. A player scoring a goal in a football match isnt legendary even if it was a bicycle kick. The fact that it was against England is irrelevant.

That's enough of the legends - Ronnie Whelan's bicycle kick for Ireland against the Soviet Union in Euro 88 also deserves a mention. "Mick McCarthy launched a throw across the pitch for Whelan to jump, scissors-kick and shin it in from outside the box. I'm no good at judging distances but I'd say it was about 17 million yards out," speculates Paul Griffin. Or should that be Paul O'Griffin?

Ray Houghton vs Italy or Bonner/O'Leary vs Romania might have got a vote but Ronnie Whelan? Naaaah.
