Just wondering about the whole X-windows deal
Rightio, first of all what is the deal with X-Windows ?
My basic understanding of it is that it is a graphical interface allowing one to
show multiple shells as once ?

And then on top of this you can run a desktop manager ( KDE is the one i have been looking at ) ?
What was it you were saying on the phone about win98 being able to use programs off the linux machine via X-Windows ?
And is it possible to let win98 use printers attached to the linux box ( as well as using a TA, view the HD)
Basicaly, in what way are linux ( X-windows 'n all ) and Win98/95/Dos able to interact ?

there are programmes out there that let you run sessions of windows/unix/dos/os2 or whatever at the same time - you need enough ram to sink a battleship but they are out there

At the same time - at the rate linux apps are being developed - I recon that almost anything is possible and if it is not - it soon will be and to find the things you want just requires a bit of a search over the net www.download.com - cnet and so on for a start.

What ways are Linux and win98 able to interact eh?
well you can telnet to the linux box if they are on the same network or both are connected to the internet also ftp **** to and back
from one comp to the other..
but if you mean that win98/95 whatever is on the same machine as your linux os then there
is no interaction <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">
basically Xwindows/KDE/WindowManager .. Wmanager being the best looking one by far..
enable you to do everything u can do on a win machine e.g proper wordprocessing and stuff like , nice graphical mp3 plugins the works.
and as for **** loads of ram?
nah.. a p166 with 32 megs of ram will do grand for up to four netscape windows a couple of shell windows and play cd's at the same time..

linux can read fat-16 and fat-32, so you can transfer files..

Hmm koopa fat32?

I thought that had not been developed yet..

fat32 been around for the last three years
i've win95 running on a 2 gig fat32 partition. saved myself 300MB changing from fat16 !!
so actually when 98 says it'll free up more space thats what it means.. not much though
cos win98 is huge it takes up the space you've freed up <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">
i used partition magic to change the file allocation size.. to 4K from 32K makes a huge difference.
and you don't have to resort to usin 98 either hehe

kali?
Read koopas again?

I mean linux does not have fat32 yet?
Ie it can not read a fat32 drive.
Well thats what i was asking as i installed
linux and then installed win98 on another drive and with out thinking i went and made the win98 drive fat32 and the linux setup could not 'see' the win98 drive anymore.

So can linux now see a fat32 drive?

yeh, linux version 2.0.35 and above can read fat-32 <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">
i tried it,
mount -t vfat
specifies type vfat, 0x0b, win95 fat-32
you need kernel version 2.0.35 or above ....

ntfs read support is also availiable on v2.0.35

"mount -t ntfs" works..

btw, are there any DOS tools which let you write to ntfs drives? i know of ntfsdos.exe, but thats read-only...
also, a way of re-sizing ntfs drives would be appreciated too <IMG SRC="http://lacerta.ucg.ie/boards/smile.gif" WIDTH=15 HEIGHT=15 BORDER=0 ALT=":)">
