Working with BT, the town has set up 10 wireless hotspots in key locations throughout Drogheda, including hotels, cafes and service stations. Establishing the network has turned Drogheda into Ireland's first Wi-Fi town.

Users are never more than five minutes from a hotspot, and the local Chamber of Commerce is hoping that the service will be a hit with commuters and remote workers, in addition to attracting knowledge-based companies to the area.

The Co. Louth town is taking the steps in an attempt to improve the telecommunications structure in the area, after an economic and spatial development plan of the town, commissioned by the Chamber of Commerce in 2001, identified the existing infrastructure as a barrier to investment. Drogheda's Chamber of Commerce is working with the IDA and Enterprise Ireland in the hopes of attracting international and national business to the town.

More of a hot spot than you'd think. Drove from Mell to the Drogheda Port and found about 12 hot spots with only 3 secured.

Looks like their not free hotspots! Reading about it in the local paper. Not sure the cost but hardly a break through in technolgy. It would be interesting to see the usage stats.
