CoPilot 6 now out with Q2 2005 maps for Ireland.

    Bloody hell.

The NavTeq maps (Q3 2005) on Maporama for the Republic are way more advanced than the ones on my CoPilot 5 and Subaru Kenwood car system (they are April 2004).

Just clicked on Monasterevin to see if the new motorway is there (it is) but all the hamlets surrounding it are there.

This is a first for Ireland maps - up to now only large towns have been included.

One problem though: the NavTeq map names Ireland as the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland!

I think satellite navigation is excellent.
But I have to say, nothing like the traditional compass and map. Sat nav is good and exciting but too handy to appreciate finding a place along with driving.

you're having a laugh right? I personally don't find much amusement in getting lost and wasting petrol going miles in the wrong direction...

plus juggling a compass, map and steering wheel isn't all that safe

Have read through the whole thread lads but have a couple of questions.

    1) From what I can gather I am as well to get a sat-nav device which uses NavT maps as its maps are best for Ireland. What are they like for the rest of Europe and do they do maps for the Far-East and the far west(Us/can/S.america).Part of the same question but would I have to get a different sat-nav device to use NavT maps in the Far East/Far West or would one sat-nat device work on all the satellites(I am asuming there are different satellites for Us/Eu/Far east)

2)I see some people here talking about buying PDA's(dell/hp/etc) then buying a gps antena and software. My question is if I want it for the dual purpose of using it in the car and then when I am walking about is the ones like garmin/tomtom my only option as these have a built in gps antena, correct?

    3) Is there any online retailer that stands out in regards to quality and customer support, and any particular brand I should be looking for. I also noticed in the thread that not all makes of sat-nav devices where quick to update there maps even though NavT had updated their maps. Is there anyone brand/maker who are consistently better than others in this

    Thks Cubix

Navteq maps are excellent for the rest of Europe.

See here, change the language to English and select the a country

    http://coverage.digi-map.de/index.php4

The satellites are the same all over the globe but only some programmes let you buy other country maps.

For instance CoPilot will sell you UK & Ireland maps, Europe, North America or Australia.

Eastern Europe is only beginning to be mapped.

I have no idea about the Far East.

You can hang a bluetooth GPS receiver around your neck and walk about with your PPC.

Most GPS companies update the map discs once a year and it varies.

CoPilot 6 just came out with Q2 2005 NavTeq maps.

CoPilot 7 which should come out in a year's time will presumably have Q2 2006 maps which should include Ireland mapped 100% for the first time.

Read the forums here http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/index.php and get a feel for what online stores they recommend.
