Erenis plans 80 Mpbs service before summer

French ISP specialised in internet access to complete buildings Erenis said it planned to launch an 80 Mbps access service in Paris before this summer, 01net reports. Although such bandwidth is only sought by a limited share of the market, it will increasingly become necessary for streaming video applications or large downloads. Erenis links its subscribers’ buildings via fibre optic links and VDSL, allowing it to circumvent France Telecom’s local loop. The company said it had already field tested a 45 Mbps download/15 Mbps upload service.

In kind of related news, T-Online (in Germany) has doubled the speed of its DSL service to 6mbps, at no extra cost. Further, they will be launching ADSL2+ shortly (it's currently in the final stages of testing), initially offering speeds of 16mbps, though again that is set to increase as well.

Our infrastructure could never support those sorts of speeds, my line is struggling to achive 2Mbps.....6, 16, 80! Those numbers will never be seen in this country without some serious investments....well I suppose ADSL2+ should help but from what Garfield said about the top speed he could reach using Smart it was only just over 6Mb....not that much growth left in our speeds :(

Invest or die is the message really.

To whatever ISP or telephone company that does invest heavily in the irish market, one thing is for certain, they won't be set to make back money for a long time! If they invest then it will be only to be creditted with bringing broadband speeds to EU averages and not for profitability!

Disagree there, if you provide high speed services such as that 80mbps services you may encourage more hosting companys and data related companys to move into the country, as ireland is the nearest country from america to europe it could possibly act as a gateway to europe for companys comming in from the states.

Then again its a Catch 22 situation

I don't think the company are using the much of the French telephone infrastructure either. From the sound of it (can we have a link to the article?), Erenis are running fibre to buildings and then distributing the broadband throughout the building using VDSL. VDSL works well here because of the short distances. A competitor to the incumbent telco in South Korea used the same methods and forced the incumbent to provide decent broadband. When people live in high rises this sort of thing is possible and economically feasible. One of the patterns that emerges is that in those companies with advanced services, the incumbent is forced to act through intense competition.

We are beginning to see the early stages of this here in Ireland (different technologies obviously) and the process is a lot slower. We won't see the sort of thing offered in France for a long time yet! Here, many believe that Eircom can be persuaded to deliver these sorts of services. In the absence of the sort of competition we see in France, South Korea, Sweden etc. it simply won't happen.

Err....why should twisted pair be the only technology to gain accpetance...

I would point you to technologies such as WiMax ( unproven yet I know ) and DOCSIS 3.0 (being ratified and almost at industry agreed stage ) are both capable of speeds far in excess of this...

Also given that NEITHER of these technologoes require a phone line - given that the likes of UGC will (finally!) invest in cable and given the number of wireless operators in Ireland and given that both can deliver voice, data and MultiMedia I think that something very interesting will emerge and that it wont be based on twisted pair...you must remember twisted pair (LLU) is only good because it is the installed local loop - it is not the best technology.

Yes but for the mass market in Ireland people like to buy from names they know; NTL and Eircom everyone knows but IrishBroadband? I've come across people who don't want to get IBB's service simply because they don't know them so they go for the familiar Eircom. There is that inertia to overcome in the lazy Irish market place, it will take time but I think eventually we will start getting multi-Mb speeds - personally I'm still waiting on Smart.......

Almost all the advances that people post about in other countries come from companies other than the incumbent taking the initiative. We have to stop thinking about Eircom delivering this or that if we want to join them.

So come on Eircom, get the finger out and give us 12Mbit/sec broadband like they have in France!
