    Italy plans WiMAX frequency tender

Italy’s Ministry of Communications has given the green light for the launch of WiMAX trials, with the first requests from interested operators expected by the end of May. A tender for the assigning of frequencies should be announced in six months. Among the first competitors will be Alvarion, a global market leader for wireless broadband solutions for broadband that has already installed more than 50 WiMAX systems in the world; and Siemens, which is planning an October launch of its product. “The government must make available the necessary frequencies and also private companies, telephone operators and public administrations must be ready to invest in this new technology”, said Luigi De Vecchis, chief executive of Siemens Communications, during a recent convention in Ischia. According to Italy’s Communications Minister, Mario Landolfi, trials will launch soon, thanks to the agreement with the Ministry of Defense.
At the disposal of the operators, which make the request, will be 100 MHz, divided up on the basis of the requirements, although only in certain areas of the country. In regards to costs, De Vecchis claims that with less than EUR 300 million in investments over the next few years, could be installed 2-3.000 WiMAX radio-base stations, capable of bringing broadband to the entire national territory. His colleague at Alvarion Italia, Andrea Marco Borsetti, says this estimate is too optimistic: “We will need at least 40 percent more”, he adds. Wi-Max offers transmissions speeds of 70Mb per second.
