simple questioning : chain tightening

have my bros about 4 weeks now and the chain could with a bit of an auld tightening up.
so i grabbed my tools and owners manual and out I went.
sadly i have not got a clue how to go about it.
i can see the nut that needs to be loosened to allow the chain to move but dont know what to use to actually adjust it.
the manual says use a hook spanner, but i didnt get a toolkit with the bros, unless its meant to be somewhere other than under the seat....
anyway is there some way to do this without buying a toolkit off ebay or going back to the shop?
