Tips for plastering please!

I had a bit of an accident the other day where I accidentally smashed a big dent in my bedroom wall (25cm x 25cm roughly) which was plastered originally. The dent is covered by a poster so I don't get killed by my dad!

I know zilch about DIY or plastering so i'm wondering how can i do a job myself. What materials would i need and what techniques should I use?

You should go to some forum and enquire about it, that way lots of people will read it and only those who have an opinion on the issue will reply.

Is there a big gap behind? You can get plaster in small enough bags in woodies, and get a rectangular trowel. As you're plastering keep the plaster wet by splashing it with a wet paint brush, but not too much. The thing is that you don't want the plaster to stick to the trowel but for the trowel to just skim the plaster. Work it in sweeping motions. I'm not too much help as I haven't done too much myself. I would recommend you practise somewhere first off. And you can sand down the finished product before you paint it looks smooth. Best of luck dude.

I reckon its plasterboard that was skimmed.Id say he has a hole inbetween battons.

Just get a small size of plasterboard and cut it just short of the width of hole but make it longer,like a rectangle.Get a piece of string and thread through middle tying a knot on other side.Get some polyfiller or that no nails stuff and put it and either end of new plasterboard(the longest bits,top and bottom)

Put the new plasterboard in through hole with polyfiller or the no nails stuff on it and pull it with string so that it grips the back of the old plasterboard.And then once its set you can smooth over it with polyfiller or patch plaster.Ofcourse making sure to cut the string before patching it up

But if your parents doesnt notice you doing this,they will probably think you've got an apprenticeship in plastering.Better off telling them and i bet your dad will fix it no probs.

But if its not plasterboard and no hole,do as FX Meister said but better of getting couple bags of polyfiller,it might be better than patch plaster as it will give you more time to play with it.

Actually thats a handy little tool there on that link...Ah the days on the sites with the primative tools,and now with these high tech ones id be lost.Well thank god I dont work on sites anymore.

Ah the goold old days. I've seen some queer stuff put into plasterboard holes for repairs. From the good old cement bag, to the modern day expanding foam. Could never understand though, why lads could not figure out the concept of expanding. Some used to fill a hole straight out of the can with the stuff, and they were mystified when it turned out like a football stuck to the wall.

No worst i've seen was a labourer patching a wall like the Jpeg above.The bonding kept falling into hole,dagnabit he would say.Seen same bloke patch the corners to try and build it up over a time.As soon as sandpaper was applied it fell back in,haha classic.

Ah he copped on a few days later,well he was shown the proper way.Best thing that happened on site was,we used to work out of a big bucket tub of brown putty(sometimes when using brown putty).

Someone actually crapped in it and done a good job of blending it in.Needless to say an old painter i worked with didnt notice the smell and grabbed a handfull...

The phantom crapper,there is always one on sites.On one snag list, it read please remove Feces from attic.

Anyway gone way off topic.

Ah thanks for the helpful hints, serious or non-serious :lol

It will probably be an absolute disaster if I have a go at it so I'll do the sensible thing........ don't take my poster down until I eventually move out of my house in 15 years time!

Hi Zane,

Nothing personal, the reason I didn't post earler is I would have been saying you won't get away with patching it.

Plaster is one of the messiest products to use around a house and I include a lot of experienced plasterers in the number of people who use it.

the cost of tradesmen is rising by the minute so save yourself some money and sleep well

Yeah, and then the trades man can charge you double the cost for your ****ed up attempt at diy. If in doubt about your ability, get the tradesman prior to **** ups.

You can't mess up plastering a small enough hole too much. It shouldn't cost too much more to have it repaired after your attempt. But I guess if he wants a flawless job then get a tradesman to do it.

sorry to drag up this old thread, im in a similar situation myself, had a few beers and damaged a plaster wall in an old shtity un-inhabited flat above a shop ( I stuck my boot in it, i think the plasterboard is broken, but it isnt put right through.) Anyway the owner has found out and it needs to be fixed. Ive been checking out some DIY stuff on the net and i dont think this looks too difficult.

Just wanted to know how zane got on with that one and to see if anyone has any adivce, i dont want to be spending mega money and getting robbed on what could be a very quick job. Opinions pls
