Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Wierd. WTF are Liverpool doing 5th? I've watch the second half and penos about 3 times and I still can't believe it.

It they use a computer to sort out the seeding of draws it'll keep stalling when it tries to sort 5th place - they should just let Liverpool play so!

Its just simply to do with how many matches you win, whether it be in the UEFA cup or CL.
Liverpool have won both the UEFA and CL in this time period, and had resonable showings all other times, so its unsuprising they are so high up

Eurosport had their Top 24 teams show on this morning from Europe and based on their points system from European competitions THIS YEAR, Liverpool are #1, simply because they got an extra 40pts for winning CL. It means nothing but at least they are top for a while anyway.

5 years ago they were in the semis of the UEFA cup and 4 years ago the were in the semis of the Champions League. I think they followed that up with a bit of a UEFA cup run.

Will people open the link before asking why a team is here or there (as it gives the amount of points per year). :) This is not like the FIFA rankings, the only fault this may have is that a win in the UEFA cup awards the same amount of points as a win in the CL. Here is this season's points for each team who played in Europe:

Like most of these rankings you cant take them seriously they are simply worked out by games won drawn /ranking of opposition team goals scored etc...

its just like the Fifa world ranking doesn’t mean a thing

Only realised that it was from 5 years ago. Thanks for that.

no its not. Fifa is a bit of of a joke because it takes in friendly matches. This takes in all competitive european matches. Only thing i disagree with as eirebhoy point out is points are equal for UEFA and CL.

I think FIFA rankings are a joke fullstop.

Like Chucky said they take in friendlies.

So...Brazil against Luxembourg(sp?). Lux win 2-0 when brazil field a side full of amatuers.

    Unbelievable.

So should Irelands points from the games vs Brazil and Czech be deducted?

    of course they should.

theres a lsit that doesnt take in friendlies and we are in the 20s or so.

But we played well agaisnt decent opposition who also played well, regardless of match signifance we still drew 0-0 with the champions. Surely we deserve merit for that.

The rankings have less points for games vs lower ranked teams so if Brazil play us and Lux and beat us both the points they gain will be different.

Only thing i disagree with as eirebhoy point out is points are equal for UEFA and CL.

Yeah, I agree with you and eirebhoy. The weighting (ie: points) they award to the Uefa Cup games is much too high. For example, look at Newcastle this year who scored very high points with a 27+ whilst Real Madrid scored 18+:

    1 Real Madrid Esp 28.481 35.902 27.115 21.723 18.104 131.326
    15 Newcastle United Eng 4.675 3.818 15.520 24.712 27.138 75.864

Granted Real Madrid had a woeful year for their standards but clearly they achieved more than Newcastle. My advice would be to take this list as an indication only, not as absolutely accurate. The team ranking is used for the seeding of draws, so it has some relevance.

Some other interesting ones to note:
    20 Chelsea Eng 6.675 8.818 5.520 22.712 25.138 68.864
(yes, they were very poor in europe before Ranieri and Abramovich's money kicked in)
    22 Celtic Sco 4.856 11.186 23.433 15.433 8.567 63.477
    48 Glasgow Rangers Sco 10.856 11.186 4.433 6.433 7.567 40.477
    229 Bohemians Dublin Irl 2.550 0.220 0.055 0.110 0.440 3.374
    236 Shelbourne Irl 0.550 0.220 0.055 0.110 1.440 2.374

they didnt played decent, we gave it socks and they breezed through it. We deserve a small amount of merit. But the reason we are so high up in the rankings is due to friendlies, and that shouldnt be the case.

We made the last 16 of the world cup didnt we.

And we were also credited for the late challenge in the Euro 2004 Qualifyers.

We also got off to a bright start in the World Cup campaign.
