    Greetings

The Compaq 40/80GB DLT Drive that I use to backup the company servers has a DLT stuck in it. Can anyone recommend where I can send this for quick repair? I'm based in dublin. I'm not bothered if I have to lose the tape itself.

Unfortunately, I inherited this drive and have no idea where it was bought. It is not under any warranty either.

    Cheers

    Tried opening it up?

Powerdown the drive, open it, there should be a release gear to the right of the drive, which will eject the tape, you will have to release the tape first, between the gear and the tape there should be a small blackbit of plastic, grab a screwdriver(straight) and nudge it to the right, then use the gear to eject the tape.

Cheers bahZ for the quick response.

I have opened the case. I'm not sure where the release gear is. There is one compartment that the DLT is in. The tape is wound in and out of another compartment where I presume the tape heads are. Between these compartments, there is a black plastic arm that I can physically move back and forth but it does not release anything. Should the drive be powered up?

When the drive is powered up, all of the lights at the front keep flashing. When I hit the Unload button, the drive makes a load noise for about a second and then the lights start flashing again.

    Cheers

You need to check the tape removal procedure from the Maintenance and Service Guide from Compaq. Hang on a minute and I'll find the external URL for you.....

What's the Compaq Spare Part Number - Should be on a small sticker on the casing? Part number should be written as CPN: xxxxxx-xx1 etc.

    Hi Gil_Dub

    The codes underneath are:
    "Assembly 152728-002"

    and

    "Replace with Compaq spare 154872-002"

Are these the codes you are looking for?

    Cheers

This is a quantum 40/80 DLT IV drive in sheeps clothing. They were used by DEC, then Compaq and now HP supply the exact same unit branded as StorageWorks (Good ol' Compaq name). I'll PM you with my mobile number - Give me a call and I'll talk you through it....
