Is there any such list available that lists all bikes and/or cars and their insurance groups available to the public? Or would you have to be working within the company to be able to access it?

Would be very interested to find out as well - I like how in the UK you can have an idea of what groups the cars are in before you ring up.

I presume the ins. companies would never release that info, it would mean everyone would go for the cheapest to insure(if there is such a thing) and profits wouldn't be as high, obviously.

But for most people(under 25 anyway), the first thing they look at is not the kind of car they want, but how much insurance will be. Feckin bastárds.

bike buyers guide has a (sometimes inaccurate) list of current production bikes and their insurance categories in the back.
the category alone isnt much help though as you have to factor in all the other important variables insurance companies use to generate a quote. # of testicles, phase of moon, bone casting, magic 8-balls, star sign etc....

:D good point, but if you can compare what group your current car is in to the group that the car you are looking at is in, you can have a good idea if there will be any premium changes.

    Buy an english car mag.
At the back they usually give a list of new cars available on the market, and their respective insurance group.
You can assume that the irish system will probably be fairly similar.

So if you know a 1.4 Golf will cost you €X and it is listed as Group 12, then go find all the group 12 cars and you can be fairly sure they will be very similar in insurance costs.

The English groups should be available online. While they're probably not what are used over here, they give you a good indication of the difference in risk between cars.

Most bike shops tell you what group a bike is in.

Regarding cars - the companys all have them on different scales.
Some companys regard 2L as being performance ffs!
The transparent system in the UK works well and is endorsed by all companys. However, the Irish companys have a cosy cartel and will not divulge that kind of info to the public because they don't need to!

    See most people.

I got a quote of 1,985 for insurance on a 96 micra, owned by me, with a provisional license online a while ago. Can't remember the site now, but it was posted here.
    Not too bad imo.

I think you are the exception to the rule - I don't think I could get that quote at 26 years old.

Actually just a quick question about insurance..
I have 1 years NCB for a bike I had a few years ago, but I lost the certificate they sent me..
Would they still have it on record? Could I request another one to be sent out?

A published (Irish!) group listing would be very handy.

My first insurance was £1290 (TP), on a 1.3 Escort in 1991.
    I now pay €450 (comp) on a 1.4 Civic :D

    Just found this:
    http://www.vauntage.co.uk/bike_groups.htm
Don't know how accurate it is re: Ireland though.
May be good for a reference.
