If they don't support php it is highly unlikely that they will support perl, java or anything else.

You'll more than likely need a DB of some sort for a forum. Even some of the cheap pay-for hosting accounts don't give you a DB.

You could use flatfile, but you'd still need some form of server-side scripting to be able to use it

Wouldn't that be disgustingly slow and tough to work with though?

Besides, all the cool kids use databases these days :)

That depends on how busy it is. It can work if you don't have any other options.

Q1. what does your host support?
Q2. can you upgrade to a better hosting plan?
Q3. when does your hosting account expire?
Q4. Are you hosted on a free server e.g. €ircon?

Ah, I designed a PERL CMS based on flatfiles once (back when database hosting was obscenely expensive.

A flatfile message-board can actually be done somewhat efficiently, provided you don't want to provide search. The bottleneck is the index page.

These people will give you free MySQL hosting: http://www.portlandsql.co.uk/

They're based in the UK, and it's surprisingly fast. It'll only work if your host allows outgoing DB access (most do).

Does that not require you to have some scripting support with your hosting account?
