Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Laptop Graphics Cards

    I'm considering buying a new laptop, specifically a Dell Latitude d610.

    Dell offer 2 choices of graphics cards the "64MB ATI MobIlIty Radeon X300" and the "Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 900 (up to 128 MB shared)".

    Which of these is faster?

    The Ati x300 is more expensive but is this justified? Is 64MB of dedicated memory really better than 128MB of shared memory? Even if there's plenty (1GB) of system memory available to be shared?

    "intel extreme" vs "proper graphics card"

    there is really no competition.
    google for some benchmarks
    using the laptops ram and a small chip as opposed to dedicated chips is never going to compare, plus you lose 128 megs of ram when you use the graphics card.

    im sure someone can explain it better,
    but put simply
    x300 would destroy that intel

    New games that require hardware T&L support will refuse to run on the Intel.

    Also it offloads more work to the CPU. Fine for a non gamer. Will meet the spec for promised 3d desktop of next MS Windows.

    ^what they said. If you don't play shiny new games the shared graphics do perfectly well and there wouldn't be any benefit in the X300. If you do play shiny new games you basically have to get the card.

    On the other hand, if you don't play shiny new games you can configure the D510 to the same processor, memory and so on as the D610 (small size difference, 200g weight difference), pay slightly less and get a 15 inch screen as opposed to the D610's 14.1. That's assuming you're not completely settled on the 610 of course and that you wouldn't be buying faster than a 1.86GHz processor in your original plan.
