    Hi guys,

I was driving home from work today. It was 4pm so it was still
bright. I noticed all of a sudden that my lights were on. I
thought to myself, "thats strange, I dont remember turning them
on". So I went so switch them off. BUT THEY WERE
    OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought I was going mad, the thing for turning on the lights was
at the "OFF" position yet the headlights were on!!!

I pulled over to see what the craic was and I couldn't figure it
out. The lights only went out when I turned off the engine. When I
turned it back on again, on came the lights.

I tried fiddling around with the thingie (not sure whats the tech
term for it is) but I couldn't work it out. Eventually, they came
off but I am not sure what I did. I thought maybe it was something
small and that I would have a look at it when I got home.

I forgot all about it and was driving around this evening and all
was normal. I went for a coffee with a mate tonight and when I get
back into car and switched on the engine the fecking headlights came
on again even though (according to the thingie behind the wheel) the
    lights were off!!

    Am I mad?

    PS. Its a 1999 Mazda MX5

Sounds like relay switch stuck on. Same thing happened to me in a Sierra years ago and that was the cause of it.

Sounds like your Mazda would rather be a Volvo :)

Possibly a faulty relay or a faulty switch "thingy". So long as they are not on with the car off, you'r ok. btw, can you switch between mains and dims and/or are the side/parking lights on or off also.

The ralay box usually has the relay identification on the cover, pull the offending relay by daylight if you wish.
If the relay clicks when you remove & insert it, then the relay is not the problem, but the switch.

btw, I'll assume it is not a Canadian model, where the lights (Day running lights) come on as soon as you start moving, a rental had me confused for a day, till I figured it out.

Had a stuck fan relay behave similaraly once, too bad it kept running when the car was shut off.

Lights are still fine today!! It happened the day I washed the car so maybe some water got in somewhere?

Note to self, "Please close sunroof and windows before entering aut car wash".

btw, water behind the dash is possible if the Ac/Cr fresh air intake plenum drains are blocked with leaves, dead rodents, etc.

Some of us use the Cloud skin when browsing boards. Black text can be a pain in the arse to read.

No, but it should be. Best skin. :D
Change to Clound skin and covert everyone else

To view who uses what skin go to the drop down menu boards.ie->Change Styles
White is the default skin and most popular.
