Comments on that page seem to suggest the news may have been taken a little out of context.
This was simply Gamesradar reading the (several-day-old) Gamespot interview and miscomprehending the quote. Harrison did *not* say the games would be free, he said the ability to get online would be free, and they were still deciding whether to charge for the games or not.
    here's the actual "announcement":

GS: Do you plan on having like a per-download pricing model along the lines of the microtransactions that will be used in the next-gen Xbox marketplace?

GH: Well, we can use it in a variety of ways. We've used some of the older games already as little bonuses, either as bonus gifts or hidden in levels of games. Certainly for the first-party titles we'll be making some of those available. We haven't really talked about whether we would sell them. The third parties can make their own decision whether they want to sell them, or maybe they will add it on as sort of a free benefit when you buy a current version of the game.
Still, wheather they're all free, or some of them, or whatever... nice move by ninty. That alone should make the console worth buying,

Well it means I don't have to be so cautious about my snes seeing as if I buy a revolution I'll be able to get a few of the games. Very happy.

I really hope I'll be able to get Perfect Dark on the Revolution. Like an idiot I never bought it and when I tried to get it second hand I couldn't find it.

I wonder if the games will be exactly the same, or will they change the multiplayer aspect of some games to incorporate the consoles online capabilities? *wants to play Goldeneye MP again*

Oh man... that makes me feel good

What will YOUR first game to play be?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

If its possible to actually play Goldenye, Perfect Dark etc multi through this (and hell even if its not), then Ninty have pulled off a masterstroke - given all of us a concrete reason to buy the revolution, even in the face of total hardware defeat!

    Go nintendo! :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,688 ✭✭✭grimloch

I remember playing goldeneye for the first time when i was staying in a friends house many moons ago, was probably the first shooting game i ever played. So I'd hope to play it on the revolution.

I have quite a few reasons to give nintendo my money now.

Err i dont think they can allow us to get 3rd party games unless the 3rd pary agrees.

Assume its all ninty stuff unless some 3rd parties who have signed up for rev allow them, but as rare now owned by Msft cant see us getting them games, has any details on 3rd party agreemens been released?

For some reason, that never crossed my mind.

    Its late, I'm tired.

And now, a little bit of me is dying inside! :(

It just wouldnt be right for them to make us pay for this. Its not costing them anything. They'd already have large servers etc. set up for the online aspect of the Revolution, and the games people are downloading - people wouldnt buy them new anymore, or probably have them in some form already.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,346 ✭✭✭✭KdjaCL

Its possible ninty had this in mind for a long time and as their licensing agreements are mental maybe its in that.

Be interesting to see how it works out.
