Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back a page or two to re-sync the thread and this will then show latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Windows Explorer Added Functionality

    Hi,
We have a network running on Windows 2000 Server.
    First:
Is it possible to have some sort of traceability on file movements in Windows Explorer. Often directories go missing from shared network drives, and usually turn up dragged and dropped into another directory. If we could trace which user-name performed this action, it would help us eliminate the problem.
    Second:
Is it possible to have 'Are You Sure?' prompts when you try to move a directory, or delete a directory from a shared network drive?
    Third:
When someone deletes a file or folder from a shared network drive, it has to be restored from the nightly back-up. Is there some sort of 'network recycle bin' function available.

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks Formatman, but its a big office, and as you would expect, no one will even admit that it is probable it could be them. And some are so thick, training might not even work.

But you are right, if that option was available, it would deffo be the best one...

Is the owner of the directory changed when moved? Or the parent directory?

Can some features of Windows Explorer be turned off via system/network profiles (or whatever the feature is called)?

bit more detail is required , do the people just need to read the contents of the files on the Network or edit the files and resave to the network ?,

Does everyone have a shared folder ?

Drive mapping might be the way to go , people go to the one drive say H: on their machine rather than browsing through half the network

    It's a pain all right
The solution is simple - only allow the "Creator Owner" to change a directory.
Or better still only users to "Add" a directory. - Of course allow admins / sensible users full control.

Problem is how do you apply these settings to the entire directory structure, without inheriting the root folder permissions (I really hate that since root is everyone full control) or changing the file permissions ?

That bit I haven't seen a clear way to do it.
I've gone through CACLS / XCACLS - NB. both have bugs and with XCACLS there is a vbscript out there instead of the EXE. (CACLS has only let me down once but a real pain to reset permissions manually /RANT)

Usually it happens by accident - someone clicks on a folder as they are scrolling the mouse - and before the second click the folder has moved to the one above it on the list - really annoying.

On the file server there is a d:\ drive partitioned from the c:\ drive.
This is divided into folders, one for each department. Then each user in the company is given permissions to tehir relevant department folder, and their PC is mapped to that particular folder. e.g. W:\Finance

The department in question has 20 draughtsmen, all saving, editing and adding and removing drawings from particular Job Folders withing their Department directory.
So they all require full permissions to the department directory, which is where the problem exists.

That is exactly whats happening, i think. And the directory in question has about 60 job folders, each with 6 sub folders, and then more sub folders in them.......
