He is presently living with his wife and family in Newcastle West and is very involved in community and volunteering and would be a great asset and a strong voice for our area. He is presently the Deputy Principal of Listowel Community College, after a number of years spent teaching in Desmond College Newcastle West. Stephen is also National Treasurer of the Principals & Deputy Principals association of the TUI. He is a member of Newcastle West & District Lions Club, Newcastle West AFC and the Arra Players Drama group. More Details welcome on
Margaret Quinn who was from County Kerry. Her mother was Mary Moore, who was from (Moyvane) Newtownsandes and her father was John Moore. The Moores had farmed the same land for at least 7 generations, as per a book written by her cousin Michael Moore. Family lore says that Maggie came with two sisters, Catherine and Julia, in a passage to NYC (?). Catherine reportedly died on the boat. Maggie would not come down from the deck for fear of becoming ill. Her sister Julia, I believe, married a Mulvihill and lived in NY. Maggie continued on to Kentucky and lived with her brother Jamie (Arthur James Quinn) until she married Tom Quirk who was also from Ireland.

Hi Tom. Sorry we (the Crusaders) weren't around. Last weekend was the Dublin Marathon so a good chunk of us were up there slogging ourselves around the capital. Next time you visit please let us know and we'll show you some of the North Kerry back roads. We meet Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Sometimes other days too.

2013 North Kerry Minor Football Championship Final:
    Listowel Emmets 3-09 Ballydonoghue 2-06

Emmets and Ballydonoghue played out a very entertaining North Kerry Minor Championship final in good underfoot conditions in O'Sullivan Park, Finuge on Saturday last, despite the inclement weather. The weather certainly put the crowds off from attending but those that braved the elements were treated to a great game of football with both teams a credit to their clubs in how they played. Great credit is due to the Finuge club for having their pitch in great condition for the match also. It was the Listowel side that got off to the better playing against the wind where David Keane converted to open the scoring this was quickly followed by another converted free. The young Bryan Sweeney playing at centre field got a fine fetch and found the waiting Michéal Stack who turned well and sent the ball low to the back of the Ballydonoghue net and with eleven minutes gone in the clock Emmets led by 1-02 to 0-01. Ballydonoghue however, responded brilliantly with an excellently executed goal to leave the bare minimum between the sides, it looked like Ballydonoghue would get the upper hand as they went one in front again the marks man of the day Micháal Stack linked well with David Keane to send his second of the day to back of the Ballydonogue net leaving the half time score Emmets 2-03 Ballydonoghue 1-05
Emmets started the Second half as they did the first with a fine point from play aided by the breeze from David Keane. Ballydonoghue found their feet at midfield and began to dominate but were unable to convert from their possession, David Keane again for the Listowel side converted a free from a foul on Micheal Stack. Ballydonoghue built from the back finding Jack Foley again who passed on to Paudie Lyons who inched past Paul Kennedy to leave the sides 2-05 to 2-06 in favour of Emmets.
It was Emmets David Keane again to the fore as he sent over two unanswered points one a converted free. As Emmets intercepted a Ballydonoghue Kick out David Keane shot for point again the ball hit the upright to the waiting Bryan Sweeney who shot low to the back of the Ballydonoghue net as Emmets led with 3 minutes to go by 3-08 to 2-06. From the kick out John Keane linked well with Jake Moriarty to sending over another point to leave the full time score Emmets 3-09 Ballydonoghue 2-06. As stated previously this was a great game to watch and highly entertaining. These two teams had met in the North Kerry Minor League final where Ballydonoghue thought them a lot of lessons in football and its great to see that the Emmets boys learned from that and put on such a magnificent display. Mike Flavin Secretary of the North Kerry Board presented the Jotty Holly Memorial Shield to an elated Listowel Emmets Darragh Leahy.

2013 North Kerry U-21 Football Championship ¼ Final:
Listowel Emmets and Castleisland Desmonds were due to meet last Monday but Castleisland Desmonds could not field a team and Listowel Emmets received a walkover and are now into the Semi-Final.

Inspite of the storm force winds and driving rain a great day was had at the Carmel O’Connor Memorial game featuring a selection of Emmets Ladies against the formidable Garda Ladies. A big thank you to all those involved with organizing the game, to those who helped out on the gate and most importantly all those who brought the lovely cakes and sandwiches to feed us all on such a wet and windy day. All money raised will go to the Listowel Kerry Friends and Parents.

As we are now coming to the end of the season Graham Shine has organised a fitness schedule to keep us going over the winter months. Graham will hold a fitness, toning / conditioning class on Sunday mornings for aged 15 - adults. The class will be €7.00 euro per person. 14 players per session.

Finally congratulations to Saoirse Kennedy on winning the North Kerry Coiste Scór na nÓg solo singing final last week. Edel Quinn, Aisling Keane, Emily McCarthy, Fionnuala Trench and Meabh Trench came 2nd in the Instrumental music final.

2013 New York Senior Football Championship:
Congratulations to former Listowel Emmets player Kieran O’Connor who played a major role in helping Kerry win the 2013 New York Senior Football Championship. They beat Leitrim in the Final 0-14 to 1-07 to win the title for the 26th time. Kerry went into the game as rank outsiders as Leitrim were going for their 4th title in a row. Kieran who is a former Kerry Minor and U-21 played a brilliant game at full back. He was tough to get past all through out the game and he won the ball on numerous occasions to turn defence into attack. When Kieran left for America he was a major loss to Listowel Emmets but it’s great to see him doing so well and we wish him all the best for the future.

OBITUARY. 30 May 1918 Sepparton News Vic.
    Dr McKenna.
It is with the greatest regret that we announce the death of Dr. McKenna, which took place at his late residence, Maude street, Shepparton, last Tuesday after noon. Though the sad event was not unexpected, it nevertheless ,'caused general feeling of deep sorrow throughout this community, among whom Dr. McKenna's long and blameless life and valuable services had earned him universal esteem.
The deceased gentleman' who was 60 years of age, was born at Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland and was educated .for the, most part at Cork, taking his degree as M.D. at Queen's University. He came to Australia 33 years ago, and for a short time he practised at Brunswick and at South Melbourne, but soon came to Shepparton, where he followed his profession, till attacked by the lingering illness to which he eventually had to succumb. His chief medical advisor, during his long sickness, which he bore with exemplary patience, was Dr. Dcvlno, of Melbourne.
Dr. McKenna married Miss Elizabeth O'Callaghan, of Hawthorn, who survives' him. Their family consisted of five sons and four daughters, all of whom are alive. One of his brothers is Arch priest McKenna. of Geelong, and one of his daughters is a nurse, and is at present working in a military hospital in France.
Dr. McKenna, so long as he was
able, look an active part in the public life of Shepparion. For a long period lie was health officer to the Shire council, and lie was also an efficient J.P., being noted on the J.eneh for the shrewdness which enabled him to seize upon the salient points of a case, ar.'< for bis unvarying resolve |o .
justice. He was well versed in current literature, and one of his menial relaxations was the study of astronomy'. But he was no recluse, and look a keen interest in the turf, being always ready to do his best for the local racing- club, and he was. also, for some time, a well-known figure on the bowling green. Although his illness had for a considerable lime forced him to withdraw from anything public, he was none the less one' of the prominent members of the community, and throughout the large circle of his friends and acquaintances. I here, is to-day a general feeling of loss, combined with one of genuine, sympathy for those he has left behind him.
The funeral, which look place this afternoon, was very largely attended, representative men and old friends' assembling from long distances, in .spite of bad. roads and threatening weather, to pay the last tribute of respect to a man of such sterling merit. Ser vices were held in the Roman Catholic Church and at the cemetery. The Rev Fr. Hogan officiating on both occasions
The funeral arrangements .were in the bands of Mr. \V. F. .Bowen.

2013 Credit Union County Senior Football League Division 2 - Round 11:
    Finuge V Listowel Emmets
    Date: Sunday 17th November
    Venue: Finuge
    Time: 2.30 P.M.

    Emmets Coiste na nÓg:
2013 U-16 North Kerry Championship Quarter Final:
    Finuge 2-09 Listowel Emmets 1-09
Our U-16s made a spirited exit from this years North Kerry Championship in their Quarter Final match against Finuge played in Finuge last Sunday. While the Finuge pitch was in great shape considering the recent poor weather, the rain which fell throughout the game made things difficult for both sides. Finuge opened the scoring with a point from play, which was followed by a great goal by Emmets captain and full forward Con Gorman who fisted a high ball to the net. Points from Jack Healy from play, and Sam Tarrant from a free put Emmets into a 1-02 to 0-01 lead after 15 minutes. Finuge stormed into the game with a goal of their own and two further points from frees to put them ahead by 1-03 to 1-02 with 23 minutes gone. A great point from play by Tom Melvin levelled matters but Finuge scored three further points from frees before the break with Jack Healy scoring a lovely point from play for Emmets to leave the half-time score at 1-06 to 1-04 in favour of the home side.

As in the first half Finuge opened the scoring in the second half with a point from play which was cancelled out by a great point from play by John Leahy who unfortunately Emmets lost to two yellows, shortly after Finuge scored two further points to put them 4 points clear with 15 minutes to play. Emmets moved Cathal Keane, who was having a great game at centre-back to midfield, and this helped them to put more pressure on the Finuge boys and four unanswered points (3 from frees from Sam Tarrant and a lovely point from play from Bryan Sweeney) levelled matters and it appeared as if the momentum had swung Emmets way but with 2 minutes on the clock Finuge put a great move together which finished with a great shot to the Emmets net. The Emmets boys played to the end and put a great length of the field move of their own together which finished with a great effort from Bryan Sweeney hitting the post and rebounding into play. Time ran out for us then and Finuge were the winners on a scoreline of 2-09 to 1-09.

Well done to them and we wish them well in the Semi Final. The Emmets boys played with great heart all through and to a man can be very proud of their efforts. Conor Beasley was solid in goals all through, the full-back line of Feidhlim Roberts, Shay McKenna and Ciaran Pierse battled manfully all day with a special mention to Ciaran Pierse who had an outstanding hour considering he is so young at U-14. Jack Wall, Cathal Keane and Niall Collins in the half-back line stuck to their task well, looking to launch attacks at every opportunity. Our mid-fielders Tom Melvin and Bryan Sweeney worked tirelessly, tracking every run and lending assistance in attack when in a position to do so with the afore mentioned Cathal Keane making a huge contribution when moved to this sector later in the game .Oran Pierse, Jack Healy, Sam Tarrant and John Leahy in the half-forward line contributed the most to our scoring and the full-forward line of David Sheehan. Con Gorman and Darragh McCarthy worked very honestly all day and the Greenville 3 came very close on occasions to adding to our scores.

The Emmets supporters responded to the bravery of the boys play and cheered them on well throughout. We wish those players who are leaving the U-16 age group and Coiste-na-nÓg well in the future, encourage them to keep at it and thank them for their efforts down the years in Coiste-na-nÓg. Well done and our thanks to the management of Tommy Sweeney, Nick Roberts and Seán Moriarty and we wish them the best in 2014.

Team: 1. Conor Beasley 2. Feidhlim Roberts 3. Shay McKenna 4. Ciaran Pierse 5. Jack Wall 6. Cathal Keane 7. Niall Collins 8. Tom Melvin (0-01) 9. Bryan Sweeney (0-01) 10. Sam Tarrant (0-04) 10. Listowel Emmets Ladies:
Fingers are crossed for Emmets Ladies as we have been nominated for Club of the Year. Only three clubs are nominated with Fossa and Dromid making the short list with Listowel. Kit Ahern entered Senate 1964
    11 March 2008 Dail Report
Senator Donie Cassidy: I pay tribute to Kit Ahern, a former member of this House and Dáil Éireann, who died recently at the age of 92. [1717] Although a native of Limerick, she spent her adult life in Ballybunion, County Kerry, following her marriage to Dan Ahern and went on to become an active member of Kerry County Council.
I had the pleasure of knowing Kit personally. She was a truly wonderful person, a formidable woman who worked tirelessly promoting the welfare of rural Ireland and, in particular, the quality of life for Irish women. Kit was passionate about the Irish language, our culture and the arts and used every opportunity to promote all things Irish. She first came to prominence as president of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association, ICA, between 1961 and 1964. Kit and her ICA colleagues travelled the length and breadth of Ireland recruiting new members and instilling a sense of optimism for the future of rural Ireland. The ICA was involved in many battles to bring running water and electricity to rural Ireland, the basic essentials of day-to-day living.
Kit was appointed to Seanad Éireann by the then Taoiseach, Seán Lemass, in 1964 and subsequently retained her seat on the cultural and educational panel in 1965. She contested the general elections in north Kerry in 1965, 1969 and 1973 and secured a seat in the Dáil in 1977 under the then Taoiseach, Jack Lynch. It was the first time two Fianna Fáil Deputies were elected to the north Kerry constituency, the other being the late Tom McEllistrim, also a Member of this House and whose family continues to be represented in Dáil Éireann. She served one term in the Dáil as a Deputy and, on losing her seat in 1981, subsequently retired from national politics. However, despite all her achievements, Kit never lost sight of her humble roots and once described herself as “the first pleb to be elected president of the Irish Countrywomen’s Association”.
She was a wonderful woman and a great person to know. She worked tirelessly on behalf of the people of north Kerry and rural Ireland. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her. We on this side of the House will remember her as a great friend who served in both Houses of the Oireachtas. The people of Kerry have lost a loyal and true person. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam.

Senator Ned O’Sullivan: Kit Ahern was a cousin of mine. She was a person I greatly [1721]admired and whom I was proud to support during her long and successful political career. She was an individual of great vision and with a strong sense of duty to serve her country and community. She was driven primarily by a desire to ensure women received political equality at a time when that principle was not universally acknowledged. She was president of the ICA prior to her involvement in politics and she worked hard to develop home industry for housewives at a time when there were few opportunities for women outside the home.
Kit was honoured to receive a nomination to the Seanad from the then Taoiseach, Seán Lemass, on two occasions, in 1964 and 1965. As Senator Alex White observed, she accepted the nomination to the Seanad as a tribute to mná na hÉireann. She was subsequently elected to the Seanad in 1969 and 1973 on the cultural and educational panel before finally being elected to Dáil Éireann in 1977, on the fourth attempt, after coming close on two occasions prior to that. Just before her death she joked to me that the new configuration of north Kerry and west Limerick gave her reason to think of coming out of retirement at the age of 92. Her political battles in north Kerry, not all of them with members of other political parties, are part of the folklore of political life in the county. Kit used to say it is not a question of the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog. She always displayed great courage in adversity.
She was a great supporter of all things Gaelic. Bhí fíor-ghrá ag Kit dár gcultúr dhúchais. Bhí sí dílis don teanga Gaeilge i rith a saol. She was a loyal and dependable individual. Her integrity was important to her and there could be no compromise on matters of principle. This was the reason for her decision to join the Progressive Democrats Party under the leadership of her close friend, Des O’Malley, a man she admired greatly and who is admired by many of us in north Kerry. This decision was respected by her former colleagues in Fianna Fáil and although she made many new friends, she never lost her old ones. However, her decision gave me many sleepless nights at the time.
Her late husband, Dan, and her brother, Eoin, were her greatest supporters. She was proud of all her family, with a special pride in the achievements of her nephew, Eoin “The Bomber” Liston. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue her work in the Seanad and to pay tribute to her in this Chamber. I thank the Leader for arranging this tribute to Kit. On behalf of her family, I thank all those who have spoken so kindly of her.

Promotion to 2014 Credit Union County Senior Football League Division 1

Congratulations to our brilliant Senior Football team who have been promoted to Division 1 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League for 2014. The lads were written off in many quarters as the whipping boys of Division 2. The panel began training in January and they gave everything they had all year long. The management team of Mikey Kennelly, Paddy Walsh and Kieran Lynch deserve great credit for keeping the lads so focussed for such a long period of time. They also won the North Kerry League Division 1 title and were cruelly denied in the County Intermediate Semi Final losing by 1 point to St. Mary's Cahersiveen. They began their County League campaign on Sunday 07th April and will now take their place among the elite of Gaelic Football in Kerry in 2014.

2013 Credit Union County Senior Football League Division 2 - Round 11:
    Finuge 1-05 Listowel Emmets 1-13

This was a must win game for Listowel Emmets if they wanted to be certain of remaining in Division 2 for 2014. They also had an outside chance of being promoted to Division 1 depending on the outcome of other games. Finuge who had already been promoted wanted to go up as Champions.

Listowel got off to a flying start. After 15 seconds of play Noel Kennelly won possession and went scything through the Finuge defence. Noel was just about to take dead aim at the Finuge when goal he was dragged down. The referee had no hesitation in awarding Listowel a penalty. Cormac Mulvihill stepped up and expertly drove the ball low and hard to the Finuge net. Bryan Murphy then slotted over a beautiful point in the 2nd minute to give the visitors a 4 point lead. Finuge needed to settle and they did when full forward Enda Galvin pounced for an opportunist goal un the 4th minute. Listowel were very dominant in most areas and pushed forward once again. Conor Cox picked up possession and kicked over his 1st point of the afternoon. Fergus Fitzmaurice responded for the home side with a free in the 10th minute.
Finuge’s defence tightened up and were now making it more difficult for Listowel to get scores.

Conor Cox kicked over a brilliant point in the 16th minute to give Listowel a 2 point lead. Finuge won and converted another free in the 20th minute to narrow the gap to just 1 point 1-02 to 1-03. Noel Kennelly tapped over a close range free in the in the 21st minute. Listowel were starting to get on top again and Conor Cox kicked over another Listowel free in the 23rd minute to give Listowel 3 point lead. Finuge put over another free in the 25th minute. Listowel Emmets finished off the half strongly when Noel Kennelly dove over a massive long range point to give Listowel a 3 point lead at the break.

Half Time: Finuge 1-03 Listowel Emmets 1-06

Listowel knew what they had to do if they were to avoid relegation, stay where they were or advance to the top Division of Gaelic Football in Kerry. They came out for the 2nd half in a very determined mood. Conor Cox set the tone with another brilliant point in the 31st minute. Listowel wing forward Maurice Whelan then put over a point to extend the visitor’s lead to 5 points. Listowel were really taking the game to Finuge and Cormac Mulvihill punched over a point to give Listowel a 6 point lead after 35 minutes. Jamie Barry then picked up possession and drove over the score of the afternoon from what looked an impossible angle in the 36th minute much to the delight of the Listowel supporters. Listowel were now 7 points in front and Cormac Mulvihill who was having a fine game stretched this lead to 8 points after 38 minutes 1-03 to 1-11. From here on both defences got on top and scores were hard to come by. Enda Galvin put over Finuge’s 1st point of the 2nd half from a free in the 45th minute.

Listowel never looked like being caught and Conor Cox converted another free in the 48th minute to restore Listowel’s 8 point advantage. Listowel were much the better team and Finuge had no answer to the onslaught. The game was now over as a contest. Enda Galvin tapped over another Finuge free in the 50th minute. The final score of the afternoon came in the final minute of the game when Maurice Whelan kicked over his 2nd point. Listowel’s win guaranteed their status in Division 2 but other results ensured that they were promoted to Division 1 for 2014.

Kentucky Irish American Louisville August 12, 1899,

No death of recent date has caused
more profound sorrow in Ireland than
that of Mrs. Pierce Mahony, which occurred at her home in Sutton, County
Dublin, July 27, Mrs. Mahony belonged
to a well-known Kerry family, the Raymonds, and was in every respect an ornament to Irish womanhood. She was a
lady of exceeding culture, and her great
personal charm was the admiration of all
who ever had the privilege of coming
within her gracious influence. To the
Irish cause she was passionately devoted,
and her bereaved husband by her decease
loses a lifelong companion who was in
complete sympathy with all his aims.

Sponsored by McMunns Bar & Restaurant Ballybunion - 2013 Bernard O'Callaghan Memorial North Kerry Senior Football Championship Quarter Final:

    Listowel Emmets 1-15 Knockngashel 0-12
Played in ideal conditions for this time of year in Duagh, this was an entertaining fixture pitting division 5 underdogs Knocknagashel against newly promoted division one outfit Listowel Emmets in this Senior North Kerry Champioship Quarter Final.

While Knocknagashel put up a good battle, Emmets always looked in control of the game with Conor Cox dominating in the forward line with 10 points, 5 coming from play.

Knocknagashel worryingly broke through the Emmets rear guard a number of times in the first half and kicked a number of impressive scores from centre forward and midfield but Emmets responded well with Conor Cox landing a couple of big scores off either foot.

Billy Doyle, Bryan Murphy and Aengus Fitzgerald all chipped in with well taken points in the 12th, 20th and 31st minutes respectively.

Emmets went in at half-time leading 0-10 to 0-07.

The second half saw a slightly more broken period of play with a number of short stoppages. Listowel maintained their lead with Cox again finding his range on the 44th minute.

The only goal of the game came at the 47th minute from the boot of Cormac Mulvihill and Noel Kennelly landed a massive point with his right in the 66th minute to all but finish the tie as a contest.

Emmets introduced Darragh Keane, Jake Moriarty and David Leahy in the second half to make their Senior North Kerry Championship debuts.

    Listowel Emmets Scorers: C. Cox 0-10 (5f), C. Mulvihill 1-00, N. Kennelly 0-02 (0-01f), B. Doyle 0-01, A. Fitzgerald 0-01.

    Old Newspapers
    Limerick Chronicle 9th July 1825.
A man named James Conway was murdered within a few miles of Listowel, on Monday, for simply driving his cow into a field where a bull was at pasture; the owners perceiving he wanted to have the benefit of the animal, without their permission, set upon him and beat him so unmercifully that death was the immediate consequence. Two of the assailants, William Doolan and Michael Doolan, were committed to Tralee Gaol the next day, for murder.

    24 June 1808
Monday last, a fool-hardy fellow named Moore, a slater by trade, undertook for the trifling wager of a gallon of porter, to ascend to the Ball on the Spire of St, Patrick's Steeple, Dublin, which a late storm had thrown from its perpendicular direction. After passing to the upper scaffolding, which did not approach to within twelve feet of the terrific point of his destination, he clambered up by his hands and knees, and placed himself astride on the apex of the Spire that had been thrown into a horizontal position. In this tremendous state of peril, he had continued but a few seconds, when to the horror of the astonished spectators, the whole gave way, and with the Ball, and about one ton of the fractured stone-work, the unfortunate man was precipitated in a moment from a height of 200 feet; his weight carried him thro' three stages, when his cloths became entangled, and exhibited him suspended between heaven and earth. Merciful Providence, however, and his own exertions, enabling him to seize some of the scaffolding, and he succeeded in regaining a safe footing. He came down through the Church and was carried off by the crowd, to enjoy the triumph of a Gallon of Porter, won at such a tremendous risk. The Ball broke through to the fourth scaffold, and the stone work fell in St. Patrick's Close, without further injury than tearing up the pavement, into which it sunk upwards of 3 feet.

Sponsored by McMunns Bar & Restaurant Ballybunion - 2013 Bernard O'Callaghan Memorial North Kerry Senior Football Championship Semi Final:
    Listowel Emmets 0-12
    Brosna 0-11
Con Brosnan Park in Moyvane was the venue for this North Kerry Senior Football Championship semi-final between Listowel Emmets and Brosna.
While Brosna dominated large parts of this game Listowel Emmets showed superior fitness and a mental toughness that saw them coming back from a 5 point deficit to eventually win the game by a single point.
Brosna started the game very brightly and found themselves 2 up after three minutes. Emmets managed to stay in touch during the half through the boot of Conor Cox from the dead ball. With Jamie Barry wearing no. 7 but playing at wing forward adding the only score from play for Emmets in the first half.
Emmets attacking movements seemed to consistently break down and it was obvious that Brosna were not there just to make up the numbers. They attacked in waves and put 9 points on the board at half time compared to Emmets 6.
The second half seemed to show improved urgency from Listowel but Brosna maintained the high standard they set in the first half during the early exchanges.
The 45th minute was a turning point in this game as Emmets began to start dominating midfield and Bryan Murphy put over a lovely score off the right.
Emmets began to drag themselves back into the game with well taken scores from Noel Kennelly on 49’ and Cox again on 51’. Improved tenacity in the tackle and a tightening up of matters in defence saw Listowel start to pick up a few valuable scores and Brosna began to stutter slightly registering only one score in the final third of the game.
Though still not playing with any great fluidity Emmets found themselves 0-12 – 0-11 up with 8 minutes on the clock. The final ten minutes of the game were nail biting for the black and amber support as Brosna made a number of last minute efforts to salvage a draw but to no avail as Emmets march onto a North Kerry Championship Final on the 15th December against the winners of Finuge and Desmonds.
    Scorers: C. Cox 0-9 (0-7f), B. Murphy 0-1, N. Kennelly 0-1, J. Barry 0-1.

The Table Quiz took place last Saturday night 30th November in the Intermediate School Killorglin. The standard was so high it kept everyone on the edge of their seat until the very end. At full time 3 teams were neck and neck. Listowel, Spa/Muckross and Curragh. It took 2 tie breakers before the winners were finally announced. Spa/Muckross took a lead of 1 point on the 2nd tie breaker and made it through to the All Ireland Final. Well done to our Emmets team made up of Daniel Sheehan, Shawn Carey, Eddie Brown and Jack O Donovan who put on a tremendous performance, we are all very proud of you. Listowel in Newspapers
    Freeman’s Journal 6 March 1812.
On January 28th, 1812 at Bristol, Hot Wells, after a lingering illness of more than two years continuance, Ann Bowerbank aged 26; and on Saturday evening the 9th ult. At the house of her brother T F Bowerbank, Vicar of Chiswick, Iasbel Bowerbank, only surviving sister, aged 22, following their youngest brother Edward, aged twenty three, and their sister Mary, aged twenty four, to the grave, within a period of ten months. — the circumstances attending the deaths of these four young persons are very remarkable. — their brother Edward arrived from India; labouring under deep consumption: his sister Mary came to Bristol to see him, at Chiswick, but would not be persuaded of his danger, until she had heard the decided opinions of the medical attendant to an indifferent person, for which purpose she concealed herself behind the curtain. "Now" said she, "I am satisfied — I hope I shall not survive him." She was taken ill next morning and, after twelve days died, preceding the object of her tender solicitude to the grave by exactly a month. – Similar, but more awful, has been the fate of poor Isabel. For several months past it has been her repeated declaration, both by letter and words, that anxious as she might be to have health and strength to administer to the comforts of her lingering sister, yet, as soon as be scene of her suffering should close, life would become indifferent to herself. On the 5th inst. Her sister was buried. On Friday she accompanied her brother to Chiswick, where she arrived without the least fatigue on Saturday. On Sunday, after a few hours of apparently trifling indisposition, from which she appeared to be fast recovering, in the act of making some refreshment, she raised her eyes, and, without least change of feature or posture, immediately expired! — They were four of the six children of the late Rev Edward Bowerbank, Rector of Croft and Baringham, and Prebendary of Lincoln.

Listowel Priest on Blab and Tans
The Washington times. Washington D.C. January 17, 1921,

SAYS BLACK AND TANS BEAT CITIZENS OF U. S.
PARIS, Jan. 17 1921, Father James J.Troy. European representative of the
National Catholic War Council of the American Legion, a chaplain with the Rhine occupation forces, returned to day from a visit to Ireland. He said:
"Even American citizens visiting outlying villages in Ireland are being
beaten and then terrorised, under threats of death, into not reporting
their grievances. I can personally vouch for one case. John O'Keefe.
born and raised in the United States. who is now living in Listowel, County
Kerry, was stopped by 'Black and Tans.' who attempted to search him.
"'No, you don't.' said O'Keefe, 'I'm an American citizen. 'Well, this is how we treat Americans.' replied the leader of the 'Black and Tans.' hitting O'Keefe on the head
with his ride butt. O'Keefe was beaten senseless. When he recovered
he was warned that if he reported his experience the cottage where his parents are bedridden would be blown up. I was a personal witness to hundreds of outrages at Listowel. The 'Black and Tans' invaded a country fair and searched us all. They made
the men kiss their boots and cry 'God gave the King' at the point of their revolvers. Others were forced to have their heads shaved and were then beaten. "On New Year Eve the 'Black and Tans' invaded a cottage at Ballydonoghue, where they tore a son from his mother's arms. They cut the sign of the cross on his chest with their
bayonets, cut off his hands and other wise mutilated the body. "Furthermore, I can vouch for the truth of the statement that the British are using girls as hostages to
protect their armoured trains from attack."

    Listowel Emmets (C) 2-06 Knockanure 1-08

Listowel Emmets (C) put in a brilliant display of football to beat Knockanure and qualify for 2013 North Kerry Novice Football Championship Final. This a thrilling contest from start to finish. Wing Forward Derek Dillon scored an excellent goal for Listowel in the 9th minte to give Listowel a 1-02 to 0-00 lead. Knockanure stormed into the game to lead by 1 point at Half Time 1-02 to 1-03. Knockanure pulled 2 points clear early in the 2nd half and were playing the better football. Listowel never gave up and Dara Hughes kicked over an ecellent point in the 45th minute to level matters. A minute later Listowel Captain and Full Forward Seán Carey scored a superb goal to put Listowel in front 2-05 to 1-05. Dara Hughes put over another point to put Listowel 4 in front with 12 minutes remaining. Knockanure then took over and dominated the last 10 minutes. They kicked over 3 rapid points to cut the gap to just a solitary point. The Listowel Emmets defence held firm in the dying moments to win by a point. Both teams deserve great credit for a very entertaining game.

Sponsored by McMunns Bar & Restaurant Ballybunion - 2013 Bernard O'Callaghan Memorial North Kerry Senior Football Championship Final:

Listowel Emmets 1-08 Castleisland Desmonds 0-10

This was a hard fought but very entertaining North Kerry Senior Football Championship Final that never failed to thrill the large attendance for the full hour. The game was played in wet and slippery conditions but both teams gave everything they had from start to finish.

Castleisland looked less nervous than Listowel during the opening exchanges but the two chances they had resulted in wides. Castleisland were moving the ball better but the Listowel defence were breaking up their attacks. Bryan Murphy had a goal chance for Listowel in the 5th minute but his shot was wide of the target. A minute later Murphy registered the 1st score of the game with a well-taken point. Both defences were playing very well and both sets of forwards were finding it very hard to make an impact on the game. Castleisland corner forward Cian O’Connor put over a free in the 11th minute to bring the sides level. A minute late O’Connor put over another free to put Castleisland in front. Castleisland were now dominating the game and were looking dangerous when they came forward. In the 15th minute Tomás Lynch was given a great through ball as he ran into space approaching the Listowel goal. His shot had Listowel goalkeeper Shane Quinn beaten but it hit the bottom of the upright and trickled wide. This was a major let off for Listowel.

In the 17th minute Cian O’Connor put over his 3rd free of the game to give Castleisland a 2-point lead. Castleisland were putting the Listowel defence under serious pressure. In the 18th Thomas Hickey who was causing the Listowel defence numerous problems drove over a brilliant point to give Castleisland a 3-point lead. Within the same minute midfielder Pat Fitzgerald drove over another Castleisland point. Listowel were being ripped apart and their supporters were starting to get very anxious. Listowel introduced Tadhg Kennelly for Ger McCarthy who went into the game with a hamstring injury after 19 minutes. Maurice O’Connell extended Castleisland’s lead with another point in the 20th minute. Thomas Hickey who was having a brilliant game drove over his 2nd point in the 25th minute to give Castleisland a 0-07 to 0-01 lead. Listowel had no answer to the onslaught and they looked a beaten side with a mountain to climb. Castleisland had taken the game by the scruff of the neck and were on top in every sector. Listowel looked rattled but as most people know you should never write them off. They went on a rare foray into the Castleisland half and won a free, which Conor Cox converted. The Listowel midfield and half forward line finished off the half a lot better. In 1st half stoppage time Listowel were given a real lifeline when Cormac Mulvihill struck for a goal. The Castleisland goalkeeper Marc O’Connor blocked his attempt but the ball rebounded off his teammate and into the net for a very fortuitous goal against the run of play. Listowel were back in the game now just trailing by 2 points. Moments later Tadhg Kennelly found his brother Noel with a great pass who gave the ball to Conor Cox who kicked over an amazing point from what looked an impossible angle. Listowel were just 1 point behind as referee Mike Hennessy blew for half time.

Half Time: Listowel Emmets 1-03 Castleisland Desmonds 0-07

Listowel Emmets came out for the 2nd half looking very fired up. They needed to up their game from what they produced in the 1st half and they did. Listowel were back on level terms in the 31st minute when Conor Cox put over his 3rd point of the game from a free. Both defences were giving nothing away and scores were hard to come by. Both sides were intent on minimising mistakes. Thomas Hickey put over his 3rd point of the game from a free in the 35th minute to put Castleisland back in front once again. There was to be no score for the next 15 minutes and possession was evenly divided. The game was poised on a knife-edge and the next score would be vital. Both teams were giving everything they had and the game was always highly entertaining. Bryan Murphy had a goal chance in the 43rd minute for Listowel but his punched effort went wide. One Listowel player who was really involved all over the pitch was Cormac Mulvihill. He was having an outstanding game breaking up attacks at one end and setting them up at the other.

Listowel really needed a score and they got it in the 50th minute when Conor Cox drove over a massive free from over 50 yards out. The sides were level again for the 3rd time 1-05 to 0-08. In the 53rd minute another Cox free put Listowel into the lead for the first time since the 11th minute again with another free from long range. The game became very tense and as both sides battled for possession. Any mistake would now be very costly. Castleisland swarmed forward and Thomas Hickey won and converted a free to level matters once again for the 4th time. The tension was almost unbearable as the game ebbed and flowed into the final minutes. In the 58th minute Conor Cox got on the ball and kicked over a point to put Listowel in front once again 1-07 to 0-09. Castleisland kept their heads and showed great bottle as they passed the ball around very well in the 1st minute of 3 additional minutes. They won a close range, which Thomas Hickey expertly converted in the 61st minute to level the game again for the 5th time 1-07 to 0-10. The game looked to be heading for a draw but Listowel attacked once again. Conor Cox received a pass from Noel Kennelly. Conor had to run away from the goals to make space to shoot. He shot from a very acute angle and put over an amazing point to give Listowel Emmets a certain victory as the 3 minutes of injury time has elapsed. The umpires after a deliberation with the referee decided that the ball had gone over the bar. This was the last action of a pulsating contest that neither side deserved to lose.

Conor Cox was awarded the Man Of The Match before Listowel Emmets Captain Denis Walsh accepted the Eamon O’Donoghue memorial cup from North Kerry Board Chairman Billy Enright much to the delight of the large Listowel Emmets following. This was Listowel Emmets 14th time to win the Championship.

It was a great pity that it had to end in controversial circumstances. Sport can be very cruel and Castleisland Desmonds were devastated to have lost such a great game of football. It looked as if they had put the game beyond Listowel’s reach after 25 minutes but Listowel showed great grit and determination to get back into a game they had no right to be in. They also had to do this against Brosna in the Semi Final when they were 5 points down early in the 2nd half. The Listowel Emmets defence of the McGuire brothers Jack and Brian, Brendan Guiney, John Heaphy and Denis Walsh deserve great credit for the way they kept their heads when things were not going their way. Goalkeeper Shane Quinn didn’t have a lot to do but his kick outs were very well judged all afternoon. Shane is the 2nd Listowel Emmets man in the modern era to win North Kerry Championship keeping a clean sheet in all games. The last was Derek Dalton in 1997. Special mention also has to go to Noel Kennelly who was playing in his 12th North Kerry Senior Final (his previous 11 were 95, 97, 98, 98 Replay, 04, 05, 06, 08, 09, 10, 10 Replay). That is some feat. He now has 6 Championship medals and he will only turn 34 on Christmas Day. Noel played in his 1st Final in 1995 when he was just 15 years of age. He is without a shadow of a doubt the greatest Listowel Emmets player of all time.

Listowel Emmets were in 4 competitions in 2013. They were promoted from Division 2 to Division 1 of the County League, were beaten by a point in the County Intermediate semi final by St. Mary’s Cahersiveen, won Division 1 of the North Kerry League and have now captured the North Kerry Championship. The management team of Mikey Kennelly, Paddy Walsh and Kieran Lynch deserve great credit for overseeing such a successful year.

Castleisland Desmonds have had a good year. They may have only won a County Shield title but very importantly they have been promoted straight back up from Division 3 to Division 2 of the County League. They have an abundance of young talent which if it is guided in the right direction could be a potent force for years to come.

They then discuss the meaning of the gospel and do an activity to further help them to reflect on it. It is pitched to suit primary school children.

Helen was in Sudan and came home a short time ago.
Posted on December 19, 2013 by helenacodyre
This post took me a while to write for a whole host of reasons.
    1) For a while I couldn’t quite process the fact I was back. Of course, I was looking forward to starting my new job and getting stuck into that new adventure. I missed my friends in London but I didn’t want my life in South Sudan to be over. I thought that my next post would be a “Farewell Post”
    2) I just didn’t know what to say. I couldn’t find the words to explain how much I missed being in South Sudan. I couldn’t quite describe in a way that would make sense to anyone else how I never cried leaving Nairobi and how I didn’t stop crying for about 3 days after I got back to London. I didn’t know how to admit that I didn’t want to see anyone or talk to anyone once I got back.
    3) My life in London is so very different to the life I led in South Sudan that I really didn’t know how to draw any parallels.
That first week back in London was I realise now and without any shadow of doubt, one of the worst weeks of my life. Of course, Fr. John and Fr. Tim were so supportive and understood how I felt. Once again, they proved how fortunate I am to be able to call them friends.
My father too understood. I had heard the story of his return to Ireland after his first tour of duty in Katanga – that faithful trip where he and the other men of A Company were taken captive after the Siege of Jadotville. He described arriving home to our small country town at Christmas time and how he just could not relate to people. What he had done in that time in the 60s was so out of the ordinary, so far away, that no one understood what he had been through. So, we Facetimed while I was still in London and he listened to me be lonesome and watched me cry….and then he told me to toughen up….and he was right.
He made me realise how happy and lucky I was to have kept and shared my journal. It meant that when I returned, my friends and family had some sense of life in South Sudan. Dad didn’t have this crutch and so his detachment from those around him was so much more severe.
He returned to the Congo and I will return to South Sudan.

THE BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST 25TH DEC.
    Thank You – ‘Míle Buíochas’
As we celebrate another Christmas and bring 2013 to a close, I feel that I’m very privileged and it is my honour to work with you as your Parish Priest here in Listowel. It has been a great year and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all sincerely for the support that you give to your Parish and to me personally throughout the year. It takes a lot of people to make a Parish active and to keep it going in these challenging times. It could not happen only that we are blessed with good staff, Denise (Parish Secretary) and Billy (Sacristan) and his family and a lot of volunteers who are dedicated to our Parish. Many of you work behind the scenes and you might feel your work sometimes goes unnoticed but each person in their own right plays their part and each does it so well.

I thank the Parish Finance Council who keeps an eye on the Parish Finances. I thank the Parish Pastoral Council for their guidance and the Safeguarding Children Committee for their support. Thanks to the Parish Liturgy Group who co-ordinate the various ministries and liturgies. The Eucharistic Ministers, the lectors / readers, Minsters of Prayer, the Children’s Liturgy Group leaders, the collectors, the counters who count the offerings weekend after weekend, those who help to distribute the envelopes, the Parish Choir, the Parish Folk Group, their members, directors and musicians. We are blessed to have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament weekly in our Parish. Thank you all who make it possible. Thank you to the Priests of the Pastoral Area for your support. And we have the Padre Pio Prayer Group who run their monthly meeting - and I’m not forgetting my Altar Servers, their parents and teachers for their support. You all do a great job and your help is much appreciated.

To those who clean the church - not alone is this done for Christmas, but it is done quietly all year around. Those who donate flowers and look after both inside and outside the church and Presbytery grounds throughout the year. So many visitors remark on how well each place looks. This is a tribute to you, so take a bow. To those of you who put up both Cribs and those who are available at a moments notice to do the various maintenance jobs throughout the year, your help is much appreciated.

We are dependant on each other for friendship, support and finance. Thank you for your generosity and kindness. I pray that God will bless and reward you and your family with all his gifts this Christmas and throughout the new year of 2014.

    God Bless Fr. Declan

    Wisdom of 100 years ago.
    OUT OF THE SHADOWS.
    By M. M. Warner.
When the shadows of your heart assemble
    In memory's sombre halls,
And the skeleton of life's regrets
    Your aching heart appals;
. When your very soul seems freezing
For the warmth of a hope that's lost.
Like a scuttled ship that's cast away
    On angry waves storm tossed;
When your heart is full of sorrow,
    When fears oppress your mind;
When friends and those you love the best
    Seem cruel and unkind;
    Then seek some weary brother,
Whose hope in life is dim,
    And soothe his fevered, throbbing b'row;
    Relight the hope in him.
As you gently lead him upward
To realms of hope's bright light,
You both have left the shadows
And the world again seems bright.
    Christmas, 1913.
