I'm sick of looking at Aoife Thornton's face. Is it really necessary to have a poster up on every single lamppost on every street in Listowel?

Pretty sick of all of them to be honest. When are the elections even on?

GOLDEN JUBILEE celebration of Knockanure Church was held on Friday 25th April 2014. Preparations for the event were being made over the past weeks. Many helpers were involved, the sacristan Margaret Carmody was chief organiser. Bishop Browne concelebrated the mass assisted by Fr Lucid , Fr McMahon, Fr O Callaghan, Canon Fleming, Fr Tarrant, also attending on the night was Fr Moore, Canon O Connor and seminarian Sean Jones. The choir and school children put on a fine performance in singing hymns. A yew tree was planted and plaque erected to mark the occasion. It was remarked that all who worked on the construction of the church are decease bar one.

    WALK:
WALK: The Hymany Way in South East Galway forms part of the national Beara Breifne Way. This way follows the route of the fourteen-day march, taken by Donal O’Sullivan Beare and one thousand supporters, which they started on New Year’s Eve 1602. This Irish chieftain fled the English forces and marched from what was his main strong hold, Dunboy Castle at Berehaven in Cork to his ally, O’Rourke of Breifne in Leitrim. Local chieftains viewed them as outcasts and attacked them along the way. They crossed the Shannon somewhere near Portumna. The crossing took place during the night to avoid attack and was made with a boat made from horse skins. By the time, O’Sullivan Beare reached Leitrim Castle, out of the original one thousand followers, only thirty five remained.

    CARDINAL
NEW YORK (JTA) — Cardinal John O’Connor, the late archbishop of New York, was technically Jewish, according to new research.

O’Connor’s sister, Mary O’Connor Ward, recently discovered through genealogical research that her mother, Dorothy Gumple O’Connor, was born Jewish but converted to Catholicism before she met and married the O’Connors’ father.

Mary O Connor Ward told the newspaper Catholic New York that she does not know whether or not the late cardinal, who died in 2000 at age 80, knew that his mother had been Jewish. Ward said her mother never spoke about her Jewish roots but that when she was growing up, she “surmised” that her mother was a convert.

According to halachah, or traditional Jewish law, anyone with a Jewish mother is considered Jewish.

O’Connor had close ties with New York’s Jewish community and co-authored a book with the late New York City mayor, Ed Koch, who was Jewish. O’Connor often described Jews as Catholics’ “elder brothers,” marched in protests to free Soviet Jews, visited the site of the Dachau concentration camp and joined Jews in commemorating the Holocaust.

A native of Philadelphia, O’Connor became an auxiliary bishop in 1979 and bishop of Scranton, Pa., in 1983. In 1984, Pope John Paul II named him archbishop of New York, a position he held until his death, and O’Connor was made a cardinal in 1985.

Mary O Connor Ward said her brother likely would have been proud of his Jewish roots. She credited her daughter, Eileen Ward Christian, for pushing her to conduct the research that led to the Jewish discovery.

    Br. Michael Canice Collins

Michael Collins was born at Glin Road, Moyvane, County Kerry on 13 May 1914, the third eldest of a family of eight. When he was eight years old, and his youngest brother only one, his mother died, leaving his father to rear the children on his own. Two of the children, Michael and Tim, entered the Presentation Brothers; James, a Redemptorist, became a bishop in Brazil; Pat, a Salesian Father, was Principal of Warrenstown Agricultural College; Maudie became Sister Mary Theophane, a member of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word in the USA.

Michael entered the Presentation Brothers at Mount St. Joseph, Cork on 20 February 1932 and made his final profession of Vows in 1937. He graduated from the National University of Ireland (Cork) with an honours B.Sc.. in 1940, and obtained the Higher Diploma in Education in 1941. He taught at the Presentation Colleges in Cork and Cobh and spent the last years of World War II teaching in Reading, England.

Following a request from Dr. Finbar Ryan OP, Archbishop of Port of Spain, the Presentation Brothers opened a new College in St. George's, Grenada, and took over the existing St. Mary's College in Castries, St. Lucia. Brother Canice was one of the group of three who went to St. Lucia, his companions being Br. Macartan Sheehy and Br. Lawrence Reynolds.

Br. Canice combined the duties of Superior of the community and Principal of the College. On the night of 19 June 1948 fire raged in the town of Castries, threatening to destroy it completely. Br. Canice persuaded the firefighting authorities to destroy all the old wooden buildings along one street which lay in the path of the flames, thus creating a firebreak. His initiative and leadership saved much of the town from destruction. An editorial in the local newspaper commended the Brothers for "striving to promote a spirit of initiative and cooperative action". Br. Canice's efforts both in education and in controlling the "Great Fire of 1948" were acknowledged in the King's New Year's Honours List of 1949 when he was awarded the MBE.

The number of students at St. Mary's had increased steadily and there was a growing demand for more places. The building however was old, small and in bad repair. Br. Canice negotiated the purchase of a large, vacant military barracks on a splendid site on the Vigie peninsula about two miles from the town. It was completely refurbished and the College was transferred there in 1952. It was now possible to accommodate over 300 pupils (the original student population was 80) as well as providing hostel and sports facilities. Br. Canice was an able sportsman and it was largely due to his enthusiasm and energy that the Inter-Island Tournament which schools in Grenada, St. Vincent, Dominica and St. Lucia hosted in turn was revived, having fallen into abeyance during World war II.

The Brothers also purchased a bungalow at Vigie which had been the Commanding Officers' quarters and this became the Brothers residence when their house in Castries was destroyed in a second fire in the town in 1951.

Br. Canice was appointed by the Governor of St. Lucia to the Education Board for the island and in 1955 he represented both the Archbishop of Port of Spain and the Government of St. Lucia at a conference in Kingston, Jamaica, on the setting up of the University of the West Indies. He was also vicar to the Provincial Superior, Br. Dunstan Curtin, at this time.

Br. Canice was a great community man, gentle, humble and self-effacing. He had a wonderful ability to inspire those who worked with him to share his enthusiasm and zeal. Calm and patient, he had a great sense of humour. He was a keen photographer and left a collection of transparencies recording scenes and events in St. Lucia. With his friend Fr.Jesse FMI he established a museum at St. Mary's to display numerous Arawak and Carib artifacts collected at various sites on the islands.

Br. Canice left St. Lucia for San Fernando, Trinidad, in 1956 and was appointed Superior there at the end of the year. For years he had suffered headaches from time to time, a problem he sometimes attributed to an old scalp injury he incurred in his youth when he dived into water that was shallower than he anticipated. Early in 1957 the pains became very severe and frequent. In March he left for treatment at a hospital in Beaumont, Texas, which was administered by the Sisters of the Incarnate Word, the congregation of which his sister was a member. An aneurism in the brain was diagnosed and though the surgery performed appeared at first to be successful Br. Canice died on 20 March 1957. He is buried in the cemetery attached to the convent of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word in Beaumont.

News of Br. Canice's death came as a great shock to the people of St. Lucia and many tributes were paid to him. The words of Br. Dunstan Curtin, who had been the first Provincial Superior of the Congregation in the West Indies and was a close friend of Br. Canice best summed up the loss felt by those who knew him:

"Brother Canice died young. Had he lived for a century he would have died young - far too young indeed , for the many that loved him."

An Open Letter to Local Representatives About Quangos in Heritage, Arts And Tourism, May 2014
    by Gerald O'Carroll

The question was posed again in recent weeks on local radio about why tourism/heritage initiatives have failed to deliver services, and why it was necessary to set up Kerry County Council’s Forum on Tourism. It seems appropriate to address this question in the light of Tralee’s 800th Anniversary, the new Local Government Act, and the merger/abolition of some town councils.

    1. Public representatives will have heard the rumblings of dissatisfaction from talented individuals and communities who felt frustrated in their efforts to participate in the tourism and heritage initiatives of recent years.

    2. The range of heritage, arts, tourism and other offices, which have proliferated under the local authority since the 1980s, appeared an obstacle rather than a help.

    3. Many of these appeared to be non-jobs, others quangos. It seemed none of the holders had experience of starting a business. Their expenses-driven life-styles affronted many.

    4. Cross-directorships existed where they sat on each others’ boards. Many also sat on the committees of community groups and societies where their presence served to emasculate concerns about the usefulness of their offices.

    5. No ‘one-stop shop’ was in place to receive submissions on tourist-related initiatives, and key officials and ceos failed to engage with talented individuals and communities in a manner that was sincere, continuous or effective.

    6. No recognisable structures evolved to receive submissions, and there seemed no graded response to submissions. Submissions remained unacknowledged or their authors felt they were being given the run-around.

    7. Quangos and status jobs were filled by locals, or local officials. A culture of entitlement was apparent, and of uncritical deference to existing vested interests, and existing practices and institutions.

    8. Some officials were promoted despite failures in the past, including budgetary over-spend; questions arose about the degree of power officials exercised in their own promotions – and the degree of effort used to source better candidates.

    9. Power was wielded autocratically, unrestrained by county and town managers. No outside supervision seemed to exist.

    10. It was by no means clear that initiatives, whether from leading officials or from citizens, were vetted independently.

    11. Leading officials seemed to promote their own initiatives – which then enjoyed the full support of Council resources, including the Council’s publicity machine.

    12. Initiatives seemed to be adopted for their populist appeal, driven sometimes by celebrity, politics and commerce. Favourite eras of history and clichéd versions of Kerry’s identity were favoured, and the resulting initiatives proved insubstantial.

    13. Officials presided at public forums and made a big impression on radio, but submissions from the public remained still-born as they depended on the patronage of the same officials.

    14. Sections of the public were rewarded with Council largesse. This dampened dissent but it renewed concerns that proposals were not being addressed on their merits.

    15. No citizen-centred society was discernible, only indications of monopoly practices and crony influence underneath the semblance of democratic structures.

    16. County and town managers dismissed complaints. Appeals were frustrated as officials appeared to hold the pen of the county and town managers – in effect sitting as judges in their own case.

    17. Elected representatives seemed powerless. If they pursued reforms they were compromised by the imperative of re-election, being particularly compromised in situations where officials could demonstrate a superior knowledge of day to day organisation.

The Great Southern Trail's Midsummer Big Walk: Sat 21st June 2014

On Saturday 21 June 2014, the fourth annual 36km Great Southern Trail Midsummer Big Walk will commence from Abbeyfeale (Old Railway Station at 10.30 a.m.) and travel the 36km route of the old railway to Rathkeale.

Devon Road Station and Tullig Wood are passed en route with the ascent continuing on to Barnagh (the highest point on the trail) which is 13km from Abbeyfeale. We suggest that a packed lunch be brought and enjoyed at Barnagh with its panoramic views and an old railway tunnel to explore if you wish. Then it's all downhill for 10km to the busy town of Newcastle West where a break for afternoon tea might be taken. The final 13km to Rathkeale brings us past Ardagh where the famous Chalice was found in 1868. In Rathkeale certificates will be presented to those who completed the entire 36km (22 miles) on foot.

Register by June 14th. A registration in advance to Great Southern Trail, 9 Bishop Street, Newcastle West.

FOYNES: 75th anniversary of the first commercial transatlantic flight to Foynes will be commemorated with an air show in July.

    Listowel Writers Week 2014 ,
    We remember

Dan Keane of Carrueragh occupies a rare place in the esteem, admiration and affection of North Kerry people for very many reasons. His genial personality, his racy-of-the-soil competence as a Master of Ceremonies on festive occasions, his sensitivity as a poet and balladmaker, all mark, and indeed hallmark him, as a true son of his environment and one in complete harmony with the rural background from which he sprang.

Rhyming is in his blood. On one side, his great-grandfather William Moore of Clounbrane, Moyvane, was close kin to Thomas Moore, the National Poet of Ireland, whose father hailed from that townland; on the other side his great-grand-uncle, Andy McMahon, of Tubbertoureen, also appears in local folklore as a poet. Both great-grandsires were evicted from their farms in the dark days of the fight for agrarian freedom.

    June 6th 02 notes

The death of John B Keane brought thousands to Listowel to pay their last respects. Everyone have their own little story of their encounter with the great man. A local woman's uncle introduced J B to the National Broadcasting Station, another came from Clonakilty having known the man he had to come to give thanks for the memories, even the man who stole the coins from John B Keane's Phone Box 30 years ago admitted his guilt. On R na G our own Gabriel Fitzmaurice gave a nice vocal account in Irish of the way J B fitted into the local scene.

    Another McMahon
    c Mahon :
I am Terry, descended from Bryan McMahon b. 1831 or 1837 who came to New
Zealand circa 1855, and married Margaret Devane in Australia on Dec 17,
1866. Bryan had brothers Patrick, John and Owen, and daughter Ellena b. Jan
13, 1839 and another daughter. John m. Ellen Tangnay on May 22, 1864. All
are believed to have left Co. Kerry (Molahiffe, Mile Height or Ballyseedy
areas), some to the USA and some to Australia for the gold rushes. Bryan's
father was Thade (Timothy) who m. Margaret Hannafin. He had brothers Jermiah
    (Darby) who d. April 16, 1857, and who m. Mary Murphy who d. Jan 31, 1878;
Terence who m. Johanna Murphy Jul 14, 1839; Owen who m. Catherine
O'Sullivan; Denis; Brian who m. Catherine Enright; Charles who m. Ellen
O'Sullivan and Daniel. Their father was Terence who m. Margaret Moriarty and
he d. Dec 10, 1840. His brothers were John who m. ? Flynn; Owen who m. Nora
Stack in 1810; and Timothy who was a half-brother. Their father was Darby
(we believe it could have been Dairmaird or Jeremiah) who d. 1778 and who m.
firstly M. O'Sullivan the mother of Timothy; darby m. secondly Eleanor
O'Mahony who was mother to the other three. Darby had 9 sisters whose
details are not known. Darby's father was John McMahon who m. Catherine
Moriarty. John's brothers were Brian, Jeremiah, Timothy and Terence. John
would have been b. circa 1710. His father was Terence who was b. circa 1680.
We believe he was one of four brothers who came to Co. Kerry from Co. Clare,
and he settled in Molahiffe. Two of the others are believed to have gone,
one to Knockanure (north of Listowel in Co. Kerry) and one to Kilmoiley. A
fourth went to Co. Limerick, where one line included the French connection
through Jean-Baptiste de MacMahon (John MacMahon) b. 1715. Terence stayed in
the Molahiffe area, and his grandson Darby (and probably Terence and his son
also) are buried in the ruins of the old Molahiffe abbey near the church at
    Firies.

Someone in the area may have better knowledge of the graves and their
inscriptions. We would dearly like to hear from anyone with this knowledge.
We would also like to hear from anyone with any interest in any of the
people mentioned above. Unfortunately the older records in the Molahiffe
parish were destroyed by fire, but the family were Catholics, and leased
land for potato farming. Terence's G/G/Grandson Jeremiah (Darby) leased land
at Bushmount off Daniel C. Coltsman, and Jeremiah himself sublet land to
Timothy Cahill. This was in 1853.

    A Literary Odyssey Through Listowel

Posted by Jackie Goodall on May 30, 2014 in News from Writers' Week | 0 comments

The sun was splitting the sky, the birds were chirping merrily and the magic that is Listowel Writers’ Week was out in full force. It was Bernard Farrell who once compared Listowel to Brigadoon – the mysterious village that appears for only one day every hundred years and then, just as mysteriously, disappears again. Listowel Writers’ Week appears every year thankfully, and long may it continue to do so. Thursday morning started with our traditional and much loved Morning Walk, with local historian Vincent Carmody. Gerbrand Bakker joined the...

A Few Words From Eimear McBride, Winner of the Kerry Group Novel of the Year 2014 Award

Posted by Jackie Goodall on May 29, 2014 in News from Writers' Week, Writers Week Event | 0 comments

We are absolutely delighted that Eimear McBride’s debut novel, A Girl Is A Half-formed Thing won our prestigious Kerry Group Novel of the Year Award 2014. There can’t be a person in Ireland who hasn’t heard the story of how her book gathered dust in a drawer for almost a decade after it was rejected by numerous publishers for being too experimental. It was eventually picked up by Galley Beggar Press and took the literary world by storm. As well as winning the inaugural Goldsmiths Prize for fiction in 2013, established to reward fiction that...

D-DAY: June 6, 2014, marks the 70th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy during WWII

The objective of the June 6 initiative was to establish beachheads at five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified coastline in Nazi-occupied France. Some 130,000 troops from three main Allied countries, the United States, Great Britain, and Canada, along with soldiers from several other Allied countries, stormed the beaches of Nazi-occupied France under a hail of gunfire and artillery blasts. 18,000 paratroopers had already dropped hours earlier to fight behind enemy lines. France had been under control of the Nazis for about four years.

From The Sacred Heart Review > 7 April 1894
A principal of one of the grammar schools in Savannah, an old time Irish pedagogue, relates an incident which is well worthy of repetition and is indicative of the aptness of the Irish youth. One day while he was instructing his class in geography the bishop of the diocese happened in, and as is his custom, propounded sere questions to the scholars. "What parts of the globe comprise the old and the new world ? " was readily and correctly answered. "When asked who was the discoverer of the new world, one powerful chorus answered, "Christopher Columbus." "Now, my little men," said the bishop, "you have told me who discovered the new world, but can any of you tell me who d'scovered the old world ? " A dead silence for a few seconds, when a little chap named Mahoney, the son of a shoemaker, held up his hand. " Well, my little man," said the bishop, " let us have your answer." The surprise of the teacher and bishop can be imagined when the youngest replied, in a voice showing confidence in his answer, " Adam and Eve, your Grace."

    Mr Flavin MP

PROVISION FOR INVALIDED SOLDIERS —APPEALS TO CHARITY IN KERRY.
    HC Deb 29 June 1900 vol 85 cc68-9 68
    MR. FLAVIN (Kerry, N.)
I beg to ask the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether he is aware that a public appeal has been made in the press by Colonel Johnston, commanding 101st regimental district, at Tralee, county Kerry, asking for assistance for soldiers now living in different portions of Kerry who were invalided home after being wounded in the South African war; whether this appeal was made owing to the fact that in many cases the invalided soldiers received no pension, and in other cases the pension granted is insufficient to keep the men out of the workhouse; and whether the Government will take such steps as may be necessary to prevent those South African soldiers from becoming a burden on the ratepayers of Kerry.
    MR. WYNDHAM
All cases of discharge on account of disability are submitted to the commissioners of Chelsea Hospital for the award of pensions. Every soldier whose disability is due to service is entitled to a pension varying in the case of privates from 6d. to 2s. 6d. a day, according to the nature of the disability. The Government has no reason to suppose that the ratepayers of Kerry will be burdened in the manner suggested.

    CRIMEAN VETERANS.
    HC Deb 23 June 1899 vol 73 c437 437

    MR. FLAVIN (Kerry, N.)

I beg to ask the Financial Secretary to the War Office whether he is aware that Patrick Hennessy, whose regimental number is 1,780, enlisted at Tralee, County Kerry, in January, 1846, for service in the 95th Foot (Derbyshires), and served with his regiment all through the Crimean War, and was engaged in all the battles under the command of Colonel Smith, and was wounded at the battle of Inkerman; that he also served all through the Indian Mutiny under Colonel Hume, taking active part in all the battles; that he was specially noted for his bravery in action by General Sir H. Rose; and that he also served in China for four years, also in Egypt, Malta, and Africa; and whether, seeing that Patrick Hennessy is now aged 76 years, and was discharged in 1868 with only a pension of 8d. per day after over 21 years' active and foreign service, the War Office authorities will take into consideration with a view to an increased pension the condition of this man.

THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY TO THE WAR OFFICE (Mr. J. POWELL-WILLIAMS,) Birmingham, S.

This case has been considered by the Chelsea Commissioners on several occasions. As Hennessy failed to earn any good conduct badges it is not possible to increase his pension.
