Did Maureen MacMahon live further up?.
How abouty Kitty Madell ( ? spelling) & the Protestant Hall?

  • Registered Users Posts: 339 ✭✭Cherry Tree

Indeed Maureen macMahon did live further along. Medil's Hall is now a Chiropractic clinic and was previously a hairdressing salon. Point of information about the Upper William St. Patrick St. issue. It would appear that at the time of the 1916 commemoration there was a plebescite held to determine if there was a majority of its residents in favour of changing the name of the street from Upper william St. to Patrick St. The name change was not favoured by a big enough majority so Upper william St. it remained. However a few die-hards failed to accept the result and chose to call their street
Patrick st. Some still do to this day!

You guys should plan a reunion next year for the 50th. anniversary of that photo.
We, the class of 1962 at St. Michael's, did so at the Listowel Arms in 2000 ( actually it was our 38th. anniversary, but we anticipated that Y2K was going to put an end to history!.)

For your '57 class, one of the local guys ( ? Ned, ? the Prophet on the way to Dromin) could begin to set the ball rolling locally. ;)

I'm so proud that my first cousin, Gerry O'Carroll, from Buna ghara, has joined the illustrious company of Listowel's writers with his new book The Sheriff, A Detective Story. He certainly has had a colorful and exciting career. My Dad, the Chum, would have been extremely proud of Gerry! LISTOWELMAEVE:)

    THE SHERIFF: A DETECTIVE'S STORY

Retired Detective Inspector Gerry O'Carroll worked on many of Ireland's biggest murder cases, bringing to justice some of the country's most brutal gangsters. He cracked his first case when a shared prayer with a suspected killer prompted the man to confess - an unorthodox method for a larger-than-life personality. From there, he went on to achieve an unprecedented conviction rate. Following his retirement from the force, Gerry has become a popular media figure and famously helped Jon Voight to prepare for his performance as an Irish policeman in the John Boorman film "The General". The film was based on the life of Martin Cahill, a gangster vigorously pursued by Gerry. "The Sheriff" recounts Gerry's story from his Kerry upbringing as one of a family of fifteen children to his professional success as Ireland's highest-profile policeman.

Interesting History of our home town and the sad times of long ago.

    Listowel, Co. Kerry
    [Records] [Bibliography] [Links]

Listowel Poor Law Union was formally declared on the 27th March 1840 and covered an area of 326 square miles. Its operation was overseen by an elected Board of Guardians, 27 in number, representing its 21 electoral divisions as listed below (figures in brackets indicate numbers of Guardians if more than one):

Co. Kerry: Abbeydorney, Ardfert, Ballyheigue, Ballylongford (2), Drumkeen (2), Duagh, Gunsborough, Kilconly, Kilfeighny, Kilflyn, Killahan, Killahinny, Kilmoily (2), Kilshinane, Kiltomy, Knockanure, Lissleton, Listowel (3), Newtownsands, Rattoo, Tarbert (2).

The Board also included 9 ex-officio Guardians, making a total of 36. The Guardians met each week at noon on Thursday.

The population falling within the Union at the 1831 census had been 65,198 with divisions ranging in size from Kilflyn (population 1,072) to Listowel itself (6,802).

The new Listowel Union workhouse was erected on a six-acre site half a mile to the west of Listowel at the north side of Quill Street. The building and operation of a workhouse had to be financed by the ratepayers of each union and in many places was seen as an intolerable imposition from England and its officials. It took until 7th February 1844 to raise the first poor rate in Listowel, with the workhouse being declared fit for the reception of paupers on 17th August 1844, and not receiving its first admissions until 13th February 1845.

Designed by the Poor Law Commissioners' architect George Wilkinson, the building was based on one of his standard plans to accommodate 700 inmates. Its construction cost £5,980 plus £1,276 for fittings etc. The workhouse location and layout are shown on the 1921 map below.

    listowelmap192110560ey7.gif

    Listowel workhouse site, 1921

The buildings followed Wilkinson's typical layout. An entrance and administrative block at the south contained a porter's room and waiting room at the centre with the Guardians' board room on the first floor above.

The main accommodation block had the Master's quarters at the centre, with male and female wings to each side. At the rear, a range of single-storey utility rooms such as bakehouse and washhouse connected through to the infirmary and idiots' wards via a central spine containing the chapel and dining-hall.

During the famine in the mid-1840s, sleeping galleries were erected to accommodate an additional 100 inmates. A fever hospital to accommodate 46 patients was erected at the north-east of the workhouse.

The workhouse buildings no longer exist and a local hospital now occupies the site.

Tony is on tour of the American West and has just arrived from San Diego to Scottsdale, which is quite next door to me.
We spent several hours at their hotel conversing about Listowel and our fellow-schoolmates.
Photos were taken & they will surely end up, in good time, on this board.
Tony & group go on to the Grand Canyon in the morning, after a hot-air balloon sight-seeing flight over our Sonoran Desert at high dawn!.:)
