1992 was my first in the Olympic, lookin forward to the reunion!
Wonder will I see any old heads?

    Hi everyone,
I was desperately looking for 2 Mick Walsh mixes that I had but lost years ago.
One of them has Interactive, Amok then followed by DJ Hooligan and I think Polygon Window Quote was also on it. One of Walshies fav mixes he used to do with Amok and Hooligan ! The other mix tape had Sultana, Ti Amo followed by Adriano Dodici, Opera Dodici and then Peyote, Alcatraz on it. Haven't a clue what the name of the mixes are but I really loved them and would love to hear them again as they bring back so many fond memories. Think they were done late 93 early 94 and some of his best work.
    Cheers

    Ah,
I remember my first time in The Asylum. Cannot remember the exact date but as far as I can recolect it would be around early 1993. I was coming out of The Olympic with two of my mates when two of our other mates where outside asking us were we into going to The Asylum. The two blokes I was with said no and I went with the two other lads, who where never there either, went "Down to The Asylum"
What I can remember is walking Down the stairs, to the right hand side of the stairs was the bar which only sold tea and giant cool pops for 50p. The wall opposite was drapped with army nets.
Immediately you would be offered yokes when you got to the bottom of the stairs and Mad Bastards (craziest e ever) were the order of the day. But the 25 pound I spent earlier on that night in The Olympic was still doing the business so I just went straight through.
And as you walked down the stairs you could see Huge Speakers at the corner of the first dance floor area you meet in front of you, and the bar to your right. This dance area held about 50 people. To the left and the back perimeter of the dance floor there was like a wooden bannisters.
( This was eventually taken down and one bigger dance area formed ) which was stepped up and had people dancing around the dance floor. This held about another 50 people. Although there was always more than that.
Everybody danced in the direction of the two big arches in the wall which had two lighting rigs directed over each arch which were controlled by the bass beats.
Through these arches was the Main dance area, heaven!!!!!
This long rectangular area was at first intimedating with its concrete cavern like and low ceiling and grafiti like paintings on the wall. When walking through the arches it was ilke a completely different club but with the same music which could typically be clubbed up B Sides of Olympic Tunes.
To your extreme left was the DJ Box, which was not a box in the early days. You could literally stand, talk, goof at the DJ with a "You are welcome attitude".
To the left of that was a corridor with a "Fire Ecsape" which was strictly upheld with a full time bouncer sitting there keeping it clear (I will give you another story about him) and the stairs to the Second Floor.
The opposite end of the Main Dance Area was the toilets which had no gender rule.
Now the dance area was f@ckin deadly. A low roof with animal sound system.
Every week had a diffent lighting rig. One weeK it could be a red theme with red lazers over the DJ facing the one directional dancing ocult and red lights over the speakers to the left hand side facing the DJ blinding you to the hypnotic sounds of DJ Rob aka later known as Pressure, the next week there could be green lazers and strobes.
There could be no more that 200 hundred people in this area alone probably less which would be better for a proper dance of you own if you know what I mean! Right up in front of the DJ Box was were it was happening for me. You could actually fell the air move from the wall of sound hitting you!
In the middle of the main dance area on the back wall was more speakers with a smoke machine on them. I know becauce one night I was sitting on the speakers and I stupidly stuck my finger in the smoke machine outlet, and boy did I fell it.
The lazers would be nearly at the height of the roof with peoples fingers touching them as if felling them them down the back of the dance floor. I remember one night in particular when all the lights were red and the place was dark, I was on Dam Busters that night, what an unbelievable night I had.
I could go on and on but I will post a few more mad stories from "The Asylum"
    another time!!!!!!!!!

A classic 1990 mix i done which represents the sound of Sides DC in 1990, Ireland's greatest ever club my old stomping ground for years, most people only do mixes and play the usual Sides classics so this is something different for those of you who used to frequent Sides in 1990 will remember, didn't really bother too much as regards mixing as back then it wasn't about the mixing it was all about the tunes and this selection would be classics that were played throughout 1990 my favourite year in Sides DC, A crossover mixmatch of styles from Bleep, Acid House,Indie Dance and classic House with the occasional commercial tunes included.

I won a Swatch watch because of Street Tuff :D It was actually a radio channel in Bray because after I had phoned in and named the tune I had to go out there after school one day to claim my prize :pac: Think thats the only thing I have ever won :(

Nice looking set Jonny, must give it a blast.

I just thought instead of the usual Sides tunes almost everyone plays (it's become a bit boring at this stage) id do a set of purely 1990 tunes, dunno how many on here went to Sides in 1990 but for those who did you'll surely rememebr these tunes.:)

I may have went on a Thursday i cant remember, Saturday nites i usually went, no E's to be found anywhere, occasionaly you would find the odd person loved up on an E and id hound them asking them were i could score the elusive much sought after love drug but to no avail, only once during 1990 towards the end of the year did i score a HALF an E in Sides and it cost me 17.50 Irish Pounds:eek::D but it was absolutely amazing, and i ditched the poppers that nite (used to take that poison every week to get buzz):o:)

Good to speak to someone who was there that long ago.

Ah good man jonny. I've had that track for years on white label and never knew who it was. Leftfield eh? Who'd of thunk it?? :D:pac:

I was too young to be going to Sides in 1990 but I do remember all the tracks being played in the Apartments. I was only 14/15 at the time so couldn't get in anywhere else but was going to the Mansion House and the Olympic by 92, and very rarely to Sides, although I really did love the music in Sides. Found out years later that my Friends uncle actually owned Sides at the time. Talk about knowing the right people at the wrong time. :(

Actually have a few of those tracks from the time. I'm actually making a mix of old Sides classics at the moment. As soon as it's finished I'll stick it up.

Funny was listening to the mondays the other day and was thinking about trying to get the Vince Clarke mix of wrote for luck into a mix cracking tune with a four beat structure.
Happy Mondays were one of the first bands I ever got into and their album "Pills Thrills & Bellyaches" is still one of my favourite albums.
Incidently, the album was produced by Paul Oakenfold and he also remixed a lot of their singles.
They were actually considered to be a "Rave" band back in the day.
I had a great tour video of them touring America around '89 '90. They actually played in The Sound Factory (Junior Vasquez's club) in NY and there's footage of them playing WFL at the end of it. Looked (and sounded) amazing.

I actually have the Vince Clarke Mix of WFL on vinyl at home, must dig it out and put it up when I get a chance.
