A good few are. That size still has an image associated with the real tabloids. That is changing, but there is still an image association problem that certain papers don't want to have, at least yet. It is changing and with another paper going that way, the others may soon follow.

It was also interesting to hear today that the last of Fleet Street in London's journalistic occupants are moving out. It was once the great street of British journalism, but Rupert Murdoch began the exodus in 1986 that is coming to an end now.

Interesting stuff, flukey hit it on the head saying that many papers are afraid of damaging their image, as the tabloid (or "metro") format is laden with crap but that doesn't always mean anything. The Indo here isn't a good example, but the UK newspapers such as the Times and Independent (london) have shown that it doesn't mean you're going to pander to a new audience.
I'd say it won't be long until the Irish Independent cuts off its broadsheet format but I do wonder if The Irish Times will ever give in. It makes sense economically as it attracts new readers and costs lest to print, but as much as I like The Times it can be a bit conservative.

The Graunidad is going to 'Berliner' format, not tabloid: slightly larger than tab.

Why are large-format newspapers the size they are? Because the King of England once attempted to impose a tax on a newspaper by the # of pages that they contained, so they printed on bigger pages.

I'll regret it, but am starting again on the tube so can see the logic, it's no longer a pratical format for a paper. SIGH

If true, thank god and it's old news, it's been here for ages.

'Berliner' is about the size of the LA Times, which is quite easy to read on a bus or train, even when standing (unless it's the type of rush hour you can’t even read a tabloid... well you have to fold it sometimes, but folding that size is again easier done).

is Berliner the size of the London Independent? That's a smaller format but isn't really tabloid

    No, I don’t think so.

the Guardian is currently about 595×380 mm(Source: dodgy tape), the Irish Times and some other papers are slightly wider at around 585×405 mm, ‘Berliner’ is about 470×315 mm (Source: Wiki), the (London) Indo is considered to be ‘tabloid size’. The nearest thing to a tabloid I have (IoS’s TV Week) is 370×290.

See the attached image for a rough idea of the sizes (green = tabloid, red = Berliner, blue = the Guardian's current size, black = the Irish Times, white = the back ground!)...
