I'm thinking of going down the route of servicing my own car, well it's 10 years old and the repair bills are increasing, and there's not much value in the service history anymore.

The second reason is that the convertible roof has been getting very tempremental, and even the mechanic isn't expert, but he is expensive. So rather than pay him a fortune to play with the system, I'd rather do it.

SAAB use the GM Tech II handset for analysis, which I've seen on ebay for about $2,500. Is there another diagnostic kit available, possibly PC based or is there another source for the Tech II?

See if you can find out who the Mac Tools or Snap-on Tools agent is in your area. When I was workshop based they both used to call around once a week selling tools "on the drip" as it were. Top quality gear for the most part. I remember Mac in particular would often have their own brand dongles for plugging into various makes of car diagnostics. IIRC prices were very reasonable if you were getting the use out of it, probably pay for itself in a service or two depending on the car.
