Been working with Mambo recently.... fantastic!

    PHP-based!

There are a huge number of CMS to choose from.

Our main site uses Typo3 , but it's not for the faint-hearted :)

A lot depends on what you are trying to achieve.
Some people even use Wordpress as a CMS , as it can be extended so easily and you can "wrap" static pages into it.

    Here's a frighteningly bad ASP.NET one running: http://www.thedailywtf.com ; and it's commercial!

I hear good things about DotNetNuke and Rainbow, both .Net. Interesting to hear Mambo mentioned. We have it where I work and those working with it have moaned constantly about it being a nightmare. Seeing as I wouldn't touch php with a bargepole I've stayed clear. To be fair though it might have something to do with the slightly dodgy crowd providing us with so-called "enterprise" functionality for mambo which seems to just involve telling us it can't be done.

I can only echo what the guys are saying about the PHP based systems such as Mambo and Typo3 -both excellent packages. I'm not an ASP person so I havent check them out. I tend to stick with the open-source systems, and what usually means PHP ;)

You'll never know the joy of rapid web application development with compiled apps, caching, server contorls. Sure tis Microsoft *makes cross*.

I've looked up mambo, it looks the business, good support community to boot.

Do you need a web host that supports Apache to install it?
What host are you using Basquille?

The reason i'm asking is because i need to find a webhost who can provide me with about 5GB of storage and unlimited bandwidth/50 GB of transefers (or there-abouts). Yonks! A webhost that supports apache, php, mysql...ermm...all for under E350 p.a. ? ? is it possible?

    unlimited bandwidth.

There's no such thing as unlimited bandwidth.

Ah, but people like to believe in it, a bit like the tooth fairy and food safety enforcement. But you'll get 50gb of transfers for that money, alright. (If you really need it; are you using it at the moment?)

Well, you'll end up paying more for Windows-based servers, you know... Java's best of both worlds, really (or mod_perl if you're odd; currently working with PERL a lot and can feel myself getting gradually stranger and more likely to use regexes in casual conversation).

am i using a web host? No, i'm looking for one thou...do you know of any decent php hosts with that kind of package (5GB/50GB transfers).
I have already had a look at www.1and1.co.uk, they seem fairly good.

But do you think you'll need that from the start? Are you going to be hosting porn or something?

Its going to host music downloads from Dj's, with the average "set" at about an hour, that would be 80mb-ish, and with about a 100 or more mixes, then thats a lot of space :-)

I have looked up 1and1.co.uk again, they seem to have everything i need, very good prices also.

I might consider hosting some porn, anyone got a camcorder?

That will be a bitch to upload with the average Broadband upload speed in Ireland.

One of the classic arguements like the average Joe is ordering servers on a regular basis so he should go with LAMP while in fact he probably has a home PC with windows on it. I don't own my own company so Windows Servers are not my problem. I have Windows XP on my home PC. Hosting most places I look is comparable between Linux and Windows (if you look in the right place). I'm currently on a free 3 month package with a host using Asp.Net 2. Suits me fine.

Free SQL Server, as well? You're not using... ACCESS, are you?

Whats the best free content management system available. Preferably ASP based.

    Plone - Python based

    or

    drupal - PHP based

There is a good discussion of how they compare here

I am not familiar with any *free* ASP based CMSs that are as good as either of the above.

No I'm using MSDE (free development version of Sql Server) and my host then has Sql Server. Sorry to destory some of the anti-microsoft mist.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,003 ✭✭✭rsynnott

I'm sceptical as to the availability of large-scale webhosting with ASP.NET and SQL Server for comparable prices to an equivalent LAMP or Java server, tbh.

I know about (and have used) the free developers' one.

Anyway, you'll never convert me to a platform that doesn't even have a real command prompt! ;)

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 8,962 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

Fair enough. I have a bias towards asp.net at the moment because it's the best technology I have used to date but I will use whatever is the best microsoft or not. I think it's non-productive to ignore microsoft.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,003 ✭✭✭rsynnott

SQL Server/Sybase is a decent database; it's probably the best mid-end one out there.

I've done ASP and ASP.NET(VB) maintainance, and found them fairly unpleasant for .NET and HORRIFIC for oldfashioned ASP, but if you like them, go ahead :)

    It may have soon...

or in the mean time there is always Cygwin

Yep, I saw that. CygWin's charms have never managed to seduce me. And in any case, it's quite difficult to get anything done from the commandline in windows; you need to use GUIs (often dreadful ones; see SQL Enterprise Manager) to do everything.
