Heatstroke in guinea pigs..tips.

    That time of year again..well most days when the sun comes out!

    Heatstroke kills!

    If your guinea pig is suffering from heat stroke (symptoms are low respiration, floppy if left for longer could be drooling, pretty obvious when you see it.

    As recommended by Peter Gurney soak a towel in cold water and wrap the guinea pig in it, do not attempt to give it fluid by mouth at this stage. As soon as the pig begins to show signs of recovery take the towel off..other wise can lead to chill/pneumonia.

    As soon as the guinea pig can stand up you can start to give it water..you can use Dioralyte ..same strength for humans..consult your vet.
    The vet can also inject with this.
    Keep an eye on the guinea pig for 48 hours, if there's a sign of respiratory problems then the animal may be treated with an antibiotic.

    Tips to prevent heatstroke: If the weather is too hot or you cannot provide s enough shade..move the animals indoors!

    Wet a towel and put it over the animals run/housing.
    Use garden umbrellas (or regular light coloured ones) as shade.
    Keep water bottles in shaded area.
    Do not blow air directly onto guinea pig.
    Wrap cold water bottles in a towel and place nearby.

    Don't wet the pig (or rabbit) and leave it outside it this can lead to chills and pneumonia.
