Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Feeding birds

I started feeding birds regularly the winter before last. Last winter we ended up getting a 2nd nut feeder, and this summer we've been putting out scraps (but no nuts, until the winter rolls in again).

Scraps includes: Slightly gone off bread, pizza crusts, biscuits that have gone soft, even a box of cereal once. The birds hang around our garden a fair bit now (which I like a lot, because I work from home two days a week and get to hear the local blackbirds sing) because they expect food.

Basically I'm wondering if there's any foodstuffs I shouldn't leave out as scraps. Obviously dried food is a no-no, but is there any other stuff?

The cereal can be bad if it has a high salt content, especially in the summer. Nuts can be fed in the summer if they are chopped or in close-mesh containers, preferably metal. Check out the Birdwatch Ireland site for tips. There is also a good book from the BBC stable by Tony Soper, "The Bird Table Book". This gives good advice on feeding.

Keep up the work and don't forget to put out fresh water too.
