I've been looking at registering a few domains of late.
They seem very cheap - 4USD for the 1st year.
However it strangely works out more expensive per year,
to register for a longer period of time.
Anyone know why this is ?
A few years back I registered a domain, for 100ukp/10yrs
Is there some trick going on ?

    TIA

The price you pay depends on a few factors - what kind of domain? .com/net/org, .ie, .co.uk, etc, and where you register it. Places like gandi.net are dirt cheap for .com/net/org.
Also if you're getting webhosting, a lot of webhosts will throw in the domain for free.

I recently switched from gandi.net (a French outfit) to godaddy.com (Yankie).

Gandi works out at about €14 per year, no messing, very reliable old school registrar.

Godaddy works out at about €10.50 per year (in USD) and is equally reliable (so far) but does more "hard sell" on things like hosting and email accounts. Things like e-mail redirection and domain masking, while free (and flexible), are hidden behind ads for paid for email accounts and hosting.

Personally I have no regrets going over to godaddy, but gandi did the job very well for years - they just never dropped thier prices and were a little slow with newer features .

    Hi

Have a look at My Domain $8.50 per year and they have DNS management also for free, with URL Forwarding and Email Forwarding

You do not need to register a domain with them to use the DNS, Mail and URL stuff.

Been using them for about 4 years or more with no problems.

    Regards

You could always try the local providers, pricing of 9 euro or so would be fairly common for a c/n/o
